In the dim winter days before spring there grows within us all a longing for more light.

When the Gaels were still on their own lunar calendar this time, from mid January to mid February was known as Faoilleach, or Faoilteach 'Wolf-house'. As we moved to the current solar calendar the Scottish assigned this name to January and the Irish assigned it to February, though Feabhra is used now.

Although this season is cold and drear, small signs of new life begin to appear: lambs are born, soft rain brings new grass, ravens begin to build their nests, and larks are said to sing with a clearer voice.

The Cailleach is transformed into Bríde, the Fair Woman of Spring, fragile yet growing stronger each day as the sun rekindles its fire.

"Bride with her White wand is said to breathe life into the mouth of the dead Winter and to bring him to open his eyes to the tears and the smiles, the sighs and the laughter of Spring."
