According to this article the police were doing nothing! They did not intervene as children were being slaughtered and in fact tried to stop parents from saving their kids! The Supreme Court has ruled several times that the police have no duty to protect you.
The real hero here is not the police, rather the mother that would NOT BE DENIED HER CHILDREN!
