Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who leads the most populous state and largest economy on the continent, has proudly announced its achievement of becoming the ‘first country in Africa and one of the first in the world to introduce a digital currency to our citizens.’

The introduction of the eNaira central bank digital currency, or CBDC, aims to complement the physical Naira, rather than fully replace it, coming around nine months after crypto transactions were banned back in February after a rapid growth in popularity for the digital currencies.

Nigeria joins an exclusive list of just seven nations that have officially launched CBDCs, with 16 states, like China, still in the piloting stage, according to the Atlantic Council’s CBDC tracking site.
