Canada Ditched Ukrainian Embassy Staff Ahead of Conflict

While preparing diplomats to pull out of the Kiev embassy in January, Canadian officials instructed them to keep Ukrainian employees in the dark despite intelligence suggesting they might be targeted by Russian forces.

Three diplomats told the Globe and Mail they were left troubled by Ottawa’s policy of not offering local workers in abandoned embassies “duty of care” protection that has allegedly run since 2014.

Ukrainian staff members - some of whom have worked for Canada for three decades - were even denied requests to work remotely from Poland or Lviv where Canadian officials were initially relocated to.
