Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan was this morning sentenced to 14 years in jail on a graft charge just one day after he was given a 10-year prison term a week before national elections.

Former cricketer Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were both found guilty of retaining and selling state gifts he received while in office for personal profit.

Their sentences were handed down mere hours after Khan was slapped with a 10-year sentence yesterday in a case related to leaking state secrets.

It comes as the country of 240 million goes to the polls next Thursday in a ballot already marred by allegations of rigging, with Khan barred from running and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party subject to a massive crackdown.

'Another sad day in our judicial system history, which is being dismantled,' a party spokesman told media.

The sentencing of Khan has also heralded the return of Nawaz Sharif - head of one of the two dynastic parties that have historically helmed Pakistan - whose own raft of convictions for corruption have been wiped.

Brian Murphy, a former FBI agent who once led the intelligence wing of the Department of Homeland Security, reflected last summer on the failures of the Disinformation Governance Board — the panel formed to actively police misinformation. The board, which was proposed in April 2022 after he left DHS, was quickly shelved by the Biden administration in a few short months in the face of criticism that it would be an Orwellian state-sponsored “Ministry of Truth.”

In a July podcast, Murphy said the threat of state-sponsored disinformation meant the executive branch has an “ethical responsibility” to rein in the social media companies. American citizens, he said, must give up “some of your freedoms that you need and deserve so that you get security back.”

"The IHR working group are operating amidst a torrent of fake news, lies, and conspiracy theories. There are those who claim the pandemic agreement and IHR will cede sovereignty to WHO and give the WHO Secretary the power to impose lockdowns or vaccine mandates on countries," Tedros stated. "You know this is fake news, lies, and conspiracy theories. You know these claims are completely false. You know the agreement will give the WHO no such powers. We cannot allow this historic agreement this milestone in global health to be sabotaged by those who spread lies."
