Somebody asked what "precipice" means. This is where my mind went:

To me, the "precipice" is the point where a society is so uncomfortable with the conditions of society (all factors, especially economic) that heavily baked in behavioral norms loose their "stickiness"... their ability to hold people in normal predictable patterns of doing the usual. New changes will seem rational that never seemed rational before.

Following is a silly example, but touches on the underlying psychological phenomenon.

Years ago toothpaste marketing people discovered the best time to pick up new clients is right after they have moved.

When a person is comfortable in their usual routine, they will rarely consider changing something like the toothpaste they use (or how they vote)... but it turns out the mind has an elasticity response to change that hits a threshold.

Once enough change has occurred in a relatively short time period (faster than the mind can integrate all of it into a new normal)...

Once that threshold is reached, the mind adapts by shifting into a mode of hyper-elasticity. Anything can be looked at in a new way, or considered from a new perspective.

We tend to incorporate the things we do often (and how we interpret news/events) in a way that we identify as "part of our SELF", and resist any changes/threats to that.

I interpret "society being at a precipice" as almost everything familiar is changed, or threatened with imminent change.

Then millions are shocked into conscious re-evaluation of EVERYTHING.

From their brand of toothpaste all the way to how they vote, and what news they trust. Everything becomes "elastic" in the right circumstance.

The majority of the population lives in semi-automatic mode. Highly susceptible to this type of programmed thinking... no matter how locked into current thinking they seem to be.
