In a landmark victory, The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights rules on 25 May 2021, that the UK's mass surveillance regime, first exposed by whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013, breached people's rights to privacy, freedom of expression and therefore unlawful.

These surveillance measures have meant that the UK intelligence agencies swept up huge amounts of our internet communications in secret and without any oversight. This included social media posts, emails sent and received, internet searches, websites you visit, and apps that you use.
