— This type of statement is extremely worrying because it is a hands off approach that puts the defense of the country in the hands of foreign militaries which may or may not take interest in fighting any armed aggression. Read this post for more context.

Is NATO ready to defend Romania though from Russian aggression? Not really.

NATO has a little over 5000 men, half of those being American troops, stationed in Romania. 5000 troops for a country on NATOs Eastern Flank is pretty shameful and dismal, rather signalling disinterest.

For comparison, Germany hosts over 35k American troops not accounting for other allied NATO nations. Germany is not bordering Ukraine and yet represents a
far greater interest for the US than Romania.

Japan hosts over 50k American troops, with almost half on one single island, Okinawa. Yet, American officials have not, publicly, called China an enemy of democracy or are in the process of destroying their relations with.

So how are 5000 troops representing the “strongest security guarantees” Romania ever received? Sure the defense of Romania should be the given to the Romanian Army but we can’t expect the Romanian Army to be capable to fight an opponent like Russia, a country with a population nearly 10 times larger and with a military budget nearly 10 times bigger. (Romania spent 7 billion USD on defense, Russia is spent somewhere around 70 billion USD).

Clearly, American interest is in the Pacific and not NATO’s Eastern Flank because if it was, the American presence would be far larger. Romania to them is nothing more than a brake for the resurgent Russian empire, like Ukraine, and will be used as such to “wear down the Russian army”.

My recommendation for Tîlvăr and frankly, any serious politician that cares for Romania, would be to learn the lessons of the Little Entente and especially why it collapsed and it all began once the French told Germany they were fine with a redrawing of Czechoslovakia’s borders. Even though it started strong in 1921 beginning in 1933, Germany began to assert itself as the economic powerhouse of Europe and the anti-German and anti-Hungarian alliance that was the Little Entente immediately fell apart as soon as the French signed the Bled Agreement and later the no Munich Agreement.

France was instrumental in the creation of the Little Entente which was envisioned as an anti-Hungarian but also an anti-Soviet alliance. It was tough to get the signatories, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and Romania to form the alliance but without the French to hold it together, it quickly fell apart.

The same goes with NATO. Without American military personnel and assets, what good is it for? Not to mention the disinterest of other major NATO countries like Germany and France to fight a war with Russia (remember Emmanuel Macron’s Europe from Lisbon to Vladivostok statement, the SPD in Germany has a long history of ties with Russia, add opposition parties in both countries which are openly pro-Russian, or pro-peace)

🇷🇴🇺🇦☦️ The house of Metropolitan Longhin Jar, has burned down last night.

The Metropolitan was not at home when it happened. The neighbours are convinced that it was an act of arson with the direct intent to burn it down.

Metropolitan Longhin is a member of the UOC under Moscow and has had a rough few months with Ukrainian authorities which are actively persecuting the Russian Church for alleged double loyalties to Russia. Longhin is an ethnic Romanian and he has joined the UOC because the UOC allows him to hold the Divine Liturgy in his native Romanian language which the other Ukrainian churches do not allow.

🇲🇩🤝🟥🟩🟥 Moldova renewed its contract with Gazprom through its subsidiary, Moldovagaz, purchasing 451 million m3 of natural gas from January 1st 2024 to April of the same year for 550 USD/m3 which is one of the most expensive costs in Europe at the moment.

In addition, through the company Energocom, Moldova bought electricity at 66 USD/MWh mainly from the Moldavskaya GRES in Transnistria.

Until Moldova builds its links with the Romanian power grid, it will have to buy electricity from Tiraspol and continue to enable the separatists. The good news is that either in 2025 or 2026 Moldova will complete these links and escape from Tiraspol’s grip.

🇷🇴🇪🇺💰 Romania ends 2023 with the worst deficit in all of the EU near 6% close to triggering the the “excessive deficit procedure” which will prevent the Romanian government from borrowing and limit EU funds. At the beginning of 2023 the former Ciucă cabinet…

🇷🇴⚠️📈 The Romanian state borrowed so much that each Romanian owes 8000+ EURs in debt.

By comparison, in 1990, the debt owed by each Romanian was at 65 EURs.

Almost complete figures show that the budget deficit was 4 billion EURs higher in 2023 than in 2022 and it shows no sign of stopping as the current social-democrat government has not made any efforts to curb its spending.

🇲🇩🌿🌲🟥🟩🟥 Moldova has introduced new environmental licenses for several industrial plants in Transnistria and a temporary licensing mechanism for the Moldavskaya GRES in Dnestrovsc and other economic agents. The mechanism is meant as a preparation for the future…
🇲🇩🤝🟥🟩🟥 Chișinău granted to the Râbnița (Rybnitsa) Metalurgical Plant (MMZ) a 10 month long environmental licence allowing it to operate without issues.

This is a sensible subject for Moldovans as the MMZ is one of the main breadwinners of the Transnistrian economy and by allowing it to operate, Chișinău finances the Transnistrian budget.

Up until today, the licence was extended monthly by the now defunct, Commission for Exceptional Situations (CSE) which was disbanded by the government on the last day of 2023.

The general perception of Moldovans to this deal was negative with most feeling that Chisinău got a bad deal and, in exchange for letting MMZ to continue its industrial activities, Tiraspol should have given something in return, as Radar Politic suggested, free the many people in arrest/prison inside Transnistria for political motives.

🇲🇩🛡⚡️ The Moldovan Parliament approved the new Land Law of Moldova inspired off the Romanian one which prohibits non-Moldovan citizens from owning agricultural and forested land.

The new law makes it harder for Moldovans to change the economic scope of their land, for ex: a landowner cannot simply choose to not cultivate his parcels and build a house/apartment bloc if in the records of the local administration his land is designated as "for agricultural use"

Lastly, it simplifies some procedures for farmers which want to expand and improve the facilities related to their work like building silos, barns, other storage units, workshops etc.

This law will take effect in 2025.

🇷🇴🇧🇬🇬🇷 On 7th November Romania-Bulgaria-Greece announced a sea to sea highway planning to link Alexandroúpolis to Constanța. Bulgaria accounted already for $6 billion to be locked up for the construction. Deadline 5 years.

The new highway will link a number of Greek-Bulgarian and Romanian military bases which are either leased by the US hosting American troops, aircraft and other equipment or have some sort of American presence.

🇷🇴🛣⚡️ Besides the planned Alexandroúpolis-Constanța motorway, Romania is actively building 450km of motorway linking Bucharest with most of Romania's eastern cities like Iași, Suceava, Piatra-Neamț and Bacău.

Added together, the motorway system would something like the pictures at the bottom.

🇷🇴🪖⚡️ The Romanian MoD wants to expand the Romanian Armed Forces by 20%!

The Romanian MoD wants to have 100k personnel in the three branches of the army, land forces, navy and air force.

Data collected/provided to NATO by the Romanian MoD showed that the Romanian Armed Forces had 81k active personnel in 2023 although the figure is questioned by observers who believe the real number is closer to 70k.

In any case, the Romanian MoD has recorded a deficit of personnel among its ranks, and, it would appear the deficit is so severe, that the MoD dropped the entry exam for NCO and drill sergeant schools, which may or may not affect the quality of the army's squad leaders

As revealed in a previous post, the Romanian Army has a lot of serious issues with its living conditions, with the only arguably modern facilities being at the Mihail Kogălniceanu (Constanța) and Deveselu bases shared with the US, with the rest having received little no attention after the fall of the communist regime and, perhaps, the worst problem out of them all, low morale due to outdated tactics, low and uncompetitive pay & benefits, incompetent leadership with the officers and NCOs, to some extent, ready to humiliate their subordinates at every opportunity rather than provide useful lessons.

Military expert, Aurel Cazacu, says that without serious improvements in the living conditions and quality changes in the officer corps, even obligatory military service will not suffice in attracting more people to the army.

In 2023, Romania allocated 2% of its GDP to the MoD but actually spent 1.77%. When it comes to budgets, every cent that is not spent, is missed and cannot be spent later. The surplus money left from the 2023 budget will find itself in the new budget planned for 2024 but will cover new costs.

🇲🇩🌨️⚠️ A heavy snowstorm hit much of Moldova causing the shutdown of the airport in Chișinău but also schools, universities and much of the public sector minus police stations and hospitals.

The snowstorm has also reached much of Romania bringing down the temperatures which were unusually warm for the period. No blizzards reported yet in Romania.

🟥🟩🟥🇲🇩 Separatist leader, Vadym Krasnoseslky released a 5 min video attacking Chișinău over the introduction of customs tariffs for Transnistrian economic agents.

He decries the ”agression” carried out by Chișinău, which ”persists since 1992”, he decried the failed federalization of Moldova (Kozak Memorandum) and made accusations of ”human rights abuses” because Transnistrian economic agents did not pay, until January 1st, customs tariffs unlike their fellow economic operators on the other side of the Dneister.

The New Border Law of Moldova which introduced these taxes was adopted by the Moldovan Parliament in 2021. Transnistria had 3 years to prepare for these changes. Note the Transnistrian and Russian flags behind him.
