💮 Dr. Jonathan Greenberg and the Global Environmental Analysis and Remote Sensing (GEARS) Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno are now inviting applications for Doctoral or Masterâ€s work that will start in Fall of 2020 for students interested in the following topics:

*Remote Sensing Science*: Students should be interested in developing advanced remote sensing algorithms, particularly those that leverage high performance computing and machine learning algorithms. GEARS is interested in the following general topics:
- Computer vision techniques applied to high spatial resolution airborne and terrestrial LiDAR and optical remote sensing imagery including data collected from airborne and terrestrial laser scanners, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles.
- Change detection and time series analysis of multitemporal remote sensing image datasets, particularly as it applies to multitemporal LiDAR, hyperspatial optical, and “hypertemporal†datasets such as Landsat and MODIS.
Previous programming experience and a background in remote sensing, GIS, and/or computer vision is highly recommended.

*Landscape Level Plant-Climate Interactions*: Students should be interested in applying remote sensing, GIS, and modeling to the following questions at local to global scales:
- How do plants respond to their climate at regional to global scales scales?
- What will be the future state of vegetated ecosystems under climate change?
- How do non-climate factors such as natural and anthropogenic disturbance impact the past, present, and future distribution of plants?
A degree or background in biogeography, environmental science, ecology, and/or biology is encouraged for applicants, as well as previous experience in remote sensing and GIS and/or ecosystem modeling.

💮Prospective graduate students will be expected to develop their own research goals, and should have curiosity, motivation, and independence. Prospective students should email a short summary of their research interests as well as a CV to Dr. Greenberg (jgreenberg@unr.edu) before applying to the program. Funding will be available from a variety of sources, including fellowships, research assistantships, and teaching assistantships.

💮Prospective PhD students should apply to the Ecology, Evolution and Conservation Biology graduate program (http://www.unr.edu/eecb) and prospective Masterâ€s students should apply to the Natural Resources and Environmental Science http://wmsi.ir/ @WMSEIR

🌀Ph.D. and M.S. Student Project Assistantship Opportunities
Department of Natural Resources and Society
University of Idaho

Cohort Recruitment:
The Department of Natural Resources and Society at the University of Idaho (https://www.uidaho.edu/cnr/departments/natural-resources-and-society/our-people) seeks exceptional M.S. and Ph.D. applicants to begin graduate study during the 2020-2021 academic year.

Our students and faculty engage in integrative research exploring the coupling of human and natural systems, with projects spanning theory and application. Our department has an excellent track record of alumni gaining leadership positions across a wide spectrum of environmental and natural resource fields.
Please see below for our list of project opportunities. For some projects research assistantships are available, and for some projects financial support is available via teaching assistantships. We encourage you to learn more by first visiting individual faculty webpages, then directly contacting faculty before applying. We look forward to hearing from you.

🌀Research Themes and Project Opportunities:
1. Wildland fire and resource management (Faculty advisor: Travis Paveglio): Projects examine the interactions between wildfire planning, land management agency practices, and policy in fostering human adaptation to wildfire across the U.S. West. Examples include:
a. Examining how human communities are organizing or partnering to plan for potential wildfire impacts or the reintroduction of prescribed fire on landscapes.
b. Collaboration or conflict surrounding the planning for or implementation of fuels reduction treatments on public and private lands.
c. Recovery from impactful wildfire events and their affect on communities or land management practices.
d. Emerging policy tools or incentives seeking to foster cross-boundary management of wildfire at landscape scales.

2. Investigating legacies of land use change (Faculty advisor: Mary Engels): Projects seek to elucidate the legacies of human caused land-use change on natural resources. Examples include:
a. Investigating the relationship between urbanization and plastic pollution of Inland Northwest waters.
b. Examining coconut legacies in tropical island ecosystems using remote sensing techniques.

3. Recreation management and Wild and Scenic Rivers (WSRs) (Faculty advisor: Travis Paveglio): Data collected for these projects are intended to inform recreation management on public lands and explore private-public partnerships surrounding Wild and Scenic River management. Examples include:
a. Recreation surveys and other documentation of visitor use activities to adaptively plan for changing recreation needs or challenges.
b. Public involvement in federal land management decisions surrounding outdoor recreation.
c. Exploring successful and unsuccessful agency-private collaborations surrounding Wild and Scenic Rivers, including the exploration of how WSRs benefit local communities.

4. Making drought data more accessible and useful to stakeholders across the northern Rockies (Faculty advisor: Chloe Wardropper):
Conduct co-produced social science research with landowners and landscape management organizations to make drought data more useful and salient. This work represents two simultaneous projects in the northern Rockies region, one focused on rangelands management, and the other on tourism and recreation.

5. Human dimensions of fish and wildlife conservation (Faculty Advisor: Kenneth Wallen):
Use social and behavioral science theory and methods to examine (a) norms, rules, and institutions; (b) cognitive, social, and policy processes; (c) individual and group dynamics; or (d) behavior change and behavior-centered design in the context of game management and wildlife conservation (potentially in collaboration with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game).
