We are looking for 3 highly motivated PhD students to work on an interdisciplinary four-year project
funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (Ireland) investigating Strategies to improve Water
quality from Managed Peatlands (SWAMP project). Starting date: 01/9/2019.

The primary objective of SWAMP is to develop an interdisciplinary approach to quantify the pressures
on waters arising from drained/extracted peatlands and develop appropriate regulatory measures,
sustainable land use management and innovative technologies to ensure the status of water bodies is
protected, maintained or improved in line with the requirements of national and international
environmental standards. The key objectives of the project are as follows:
• To improve our understanding of the hydrology, hydrogeology, water balances and nutrient
exports from drained and extracted peatlands.
• To investigate the impacts and pressures on water quality (chemistry, aquatic biota and
hydromorphology) arising from the drainage and mining of peatlands by identifying
contaminants pressure zones and assessing the significance and extent of these
environmental impacts vis-à-vis the Water Framework Directive and Flood Directive targets.
• To evaluate environmental protection measures in order to develop best practices guidelines
by appraising and developing a) robust water purification methods and b) sustainable landuse management practices including restoration/rewetting and after-use of cutaway/cutover bogs.

The 3 PhD candidates will work within a UCD multidisciplinary team comprised of researchers from
Peatland Science / Freshwater Ecology / Environmental Hydrology Research Groups, as well as industry collaborators.

Project Principal Investigators: Dr Florence Renou-Wilson (UCD - Peatland Scientist); Ass. Prof. Mary Kelly-Quinn (UCD- Freshwater Ecologist); Ass. Prof. Fiachra Oâ€Loughlin (UCD- Hydrological modelling), Prof. Michael Bruen (UCD- Prof. of Environmental Hydrology) and Dr Shane Regan (NPWS – Ecohydrologist). Other partners are Ass. Prof Shane Donohue (UCD – Geotechnical engineering), Dr Josephine Treacy (Limerick IT – Analytical scientist) and Dr Connie Oâ€Driscoll (Ecologist at Ryan Hanley)

PhD 1: Experimental studies evaluating water pollution mitigation measures at drained and
extracted peatland sites and development of land use management strategies. For details about the position and how to apply contact: Dr Florence Renou-Wilson Florence.Renou@ucd.ie

PhD 2: Investigations into the distal downstream influence of peat extraction and peat drainage
activities on the physico-chemical composition and biodiversity of associated aquatic habitats.
For details about the position and how to apply contact: Ass. Prof. Mary Kelly-Quinn(Mary.Kelly-Quinn@ucd.ie)

PhD 3: Modelling of the effects of drainage and water treatment on the hydrology, hydromorphology and hydrochemistry of industrial cutaway peatlands. For details about the position and how to apply contact: Ass. Prof. Fiachra Oâ€Loughlin Fiachra.Oloughlin@ucd.ie

All three of these positions are available from September 2019 onwards and are funded for a period of four years. The funding package includes a scholarship of €17,000 per annum plus UCD Tuition fees at EU rates. The application deadline is 31 July 2019.

UCD is committed to creating an inclusive environment where diversity is celebrated, and everyone
is afforded equality of opportunity. To that end, the university adheres to a range of equality,
diversity and inclusion policies. We encourage applicants to consult those policies at: https://www.ucd.ie/equality/

I am seeking a candidate for a PhD position at University of Missouri studying regeneration ecology of shortleaf pine. Shortleaf pine forests provide important ecological services and conservation value throughout the central, eastern, and southern US. Currently, there are several large restoration projects and initiatives for increasing the abundance of shortleaf pine and mixed shortleaf pine-hardwood ecosystems, yet shortleaf pine regeneration has remained challenging in many areas. There are several factors possibly limiting shortleaf pine regeneration success, such as variable seed crops, poor seedbed and germination, and abundant competition from established hardwood stems. Prescribed fire is often used to favor shortleaf pine regeneration yet success is marginal in the Missouri Ozark region. Thus, other release treatments may be more efficient for reaching regeneration targets. This project will study the regeneration ecology of shortleaf pine in relation to common competing hardwood trees to better understand the factors affecting regeneration success and inform silvicultural practice. Evidence suggests that managers could alter prescriptions to target specific forest composition goals, including pure shortleaf pine stands or various mixtures of shortleaf pine-hardwood stands.

This project will support a Doctoral Graduate Research Assistantship with Dr. Benjamin Knapp in the School of Natural Resources (https://snr.missouri.edu/graduate-studies/forestry-graduate-program/) at University of Missouri, in collaboration with the USDA Forest Service and Missouri Department of Conservation. This graduate assistantship will include four years of funding support ($24,000/year stipend, health insurance, tuition). The duties of this position will include completion of required coursework, field sampling throughout the Missouri Ozarks, data organization, and data analyses related to study objectives. The candidate is expected to complete a dissertation and at least three peer-reviewed publications, one of which should be published prior to graduating. Competitive candidates for this position will have a M.S. degree in forestry, natural resources, biological science, ecology or a closely related discipline, proficiency in written and oral communication, strong GRE scores, and evidence of scholastic success. The position can begin in August 2019.

To apply, please submit the following to Dr. Benjamin Knapp (knappb@missouri.edu):
1)      personal statement of career goals
2)      resume or curriculum vitae
3)      transcripts (can be unofficial)
4)      GRE scores
5)      contact information for three references
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until a candidate is selected.
