On August 24, Treasury launched the Quantum Readiness Task Force. Its job is to move the entire American financial system off encryption that a quantum computer will eventually break.
Secretary Bessent's framing, "America must lead in securing the technologies that power our economy."
They'll focus on these three areas:
Sector alignment and the migration itself, coordinating banks, clearinghouses, and payment networks onto post-quantum cryptography.
Third-party and vendor readiness, because a bank is only as quantum-safe as its weakest software supplier.
And the one that should wake up crypto. A dedicated Digital Assets and Emerging Technology Risk workstream. Bitcoin and every digital asset now sit inside a federal quantum-risk framework. The signatures securing crypto wallets are exactly the kind a big quantum machine breaks first.
