Merkel announces tighter restrictions for unvaccinated Germans as coronavirus cases soar
Chancellor says measures are needed due to ‘dramatic’ increase in COVID infections.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday announced a series of new anti-COVID measures, placing tighter restrictions on unvaccinated people to cope with what she called a "dramatic" worsening of the pandemic in the country.
The new measures, agreed in a crisis meeting with Germany's 16 state premiers, include restrictions in areas that pass a threshold of three people hospitalized with COVID-19 per 100,000 inhabitants. In areas that breach this limit, access to public spaces such as sporting and cultural venues or restaurants will be limited to people who are vaccinated against COVID, or have previously had the coronavirus and have recovered. Twelve states are currently above that threshold.
In areas that pass a threshold of six hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants, people who are vaccinated or who have recovered will also be required to provide a negative COVID test in order to access public spaces.
Further restrictions are also planned for areas with more than nine hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants — currently, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
Merkel also agreed with the state premiers that health care and care home employees must be vaccinated. The states asked the government "to implement the vaccination requirement as soon as possible," DW reported.
Merkel is the caretaker German chancellor until a new government takes the reins — and this delicate transition period has coincided with sky-rocketing COVID infections.
Germany on Thursday reported more than 60,000 new infections in a single day for the first time since the pandemic started, while parties in parliament continue to bicker over coronavirus rules and their implementation.

Die Bundeskanzlerin sagt, die Maßnahmen seien aufgrund des "dramatischen" Anstiegs der COVID-Infektionen notwendig.

Die deutsche Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel kündigte am Donnerstag eine Reihe neuer Maßnahmen zur Bekämpfung von COVID an und verhängte strengere Beschränkungen für nicht geimpfte Personen, um der, wie sie es nannte, "dramatischen" Verschärfung der Pandemie in ihrem Land zu begegnen.
Zu den neuen Maßnahmen, die in einer Krisensitzung mit den 16 Ministerpräsidenten der deutschen Bundesländer vereinbart wurden, gehören Beschränkungen in Gebieten, in denen ein Schwellenwert von drei mit COVID-19 hospitalisierten Personen pro 100.000 Einwohner überschritten wird. In Gebieten, die diesen Grenzwert überschreiten, wird der Zugang zu öffentlichen Räumen wie Sport- und Kultureinrichtungen oder Restaurants auf Personen beschränkt, die gegen COVID geimpft sind oder das Coronavirus bereits durchgemacht haben und davon genesen sind. Zwölf Staaten liegen derzeit über diesem Schwellenwert.
In Gebieten, in denen der Schwellenwert von sechs Krankenhausaufenthalten pro 100 000 Einwohner überschritten wird, müssen auch geimpfte oder genesene Personen einen negativen COVID-Test vorweisen, um Zugang zu öffentlichen Einrichtungen zu erhalten.
Weitere Einschränkungen sind auch für Gebiete mit mehr als neun Krankenhausaufenthalten pro 100.000 Einwohner geplant - derzeit Sachsen-Anhalt und Thüringen.
Merkel einigte sich mit den Ministerpräsidenten der Länder auch darauf, dass Mitarbeiter von Krankenhäusern und Pflegeheimen geimpft werden müssen. Die Länder forderten die Bundesregierung auf, "die Impfpflicht so schnell wie möglich umzusetzen", berichtete die DW.
Merkel ist die geschäftsführende deutsche Bundeskanzlerin, bis eine neue Regierung die Zügel in die Hand nimmt - und diese heikle Übergangszeit fällt mit einem sprunghaften Anstieg der COVID-Infektionen zusammen.
Am Donnerstag meldete Deutschland zum ersten Mal seit Beginn der Pandemie mehr als 60.000 Neuinfektionen an einem einzigen Tag, während die Parteien im Parlament weiterhin über Coronavirus-Vorschriften und deren Umsetzung streiten.
