Scotland's Deputy First Minister John Swinney is under pressure to abolish vaccination cards after a new Oxford study found that dually vaccinated people are just as likely to pass covid to the unvaccinated.
The effectiveness of vaccines in curbing transmission - particularly AstraZeneca doses - wears off over time. That's according to a study that appears to undermine the reasoning behind new laws requiring proof of vaccination to enter soccer fields and nightclubs.
The deputy first minister explained that customers may now have to show a negative Covid test, as well as a vaccination certificate, before being allowed to visit more indoor venues such as pubs, restaurants, gyms and cafes.
However, this "theoretical option" has sparked a backlash from pubs and restaurants, who claim they face an "avalanche of cancellations" if approved.
A study by Oxford University's Nuffield Department of Medicine, which helped develop AstraZeneca's vaccine, revealed declining vaccine effectiveness after 12 weeks.
It found that vaccinated individuals were almost as infectious as unvaccinated individuals 12 weeks after the second AstraZeneca vaccination.
According to the study, "The reduction in transmission decreased over time after the second vaccination, with Delta reaching levels similar to unvaccinated individuals in [AstraZeneca] at 12 weeks and significantly attenuated in [Pfizer-BioNTech]. Vaccine protection in contacts also declined in the three months following the second vaccination."
The study echoes research published last month in the Lancet that found that "the effect of the vaccine on reducing transmission associated with the spread of the delta variant is minimal.
Swinney acknowledged the research findings, but pledged to continue using the vaccination cards in clubs and sports stadiums and to continue consulting with companies to expand them to other areas.

Practically compulsory vaccination for Bundeswehr decided: soldiers must tolerate Corona vaccination
For Bundeswehr soldiers, protection against the coronavirus is to be included in the list of vaccinations that must be tolerated. An arbitration committee made a recommendation to this effect on Monday after hours of negotiations, as the Deutsche Presse-Agentur learned from the Defense Ministry. The panel, consisting of three representatives each from the Defense Ministry and the participation committees, thus reached a preliminary decision in a dispute that had lasted for months.
A decision by the ministry's military or political leadership is now still needed for inclusion in the so-called basic vaccination scheme for men and women in the armed forces. Finished plans to make vaccinations against the coronavirus mandatory for the more than 180,000 men and women in the armed forces had initially been delayed because of opposition from personnel representatives.
In the German armed forces, the obligation to tolerate vaccination and preventive measures was introduced several years ago. Soldiers who refuse to do so face disciplinary consequences. The Bundeswehr refers to the Soldiers' Act and the operational readiness of the troops.
What does a duty to tolerate mean?
"The soldier must tolerate medical measures against his will only if they 1. serve to prevent or combat communicable diseases or 2. serve to determine his fitness for service or deployment," reads the Soldiers Act, Section 17a. And: "If the soldier refuses a reasonable medical measure and his ability to serve or work is impaired as a result, he can be denied care in this respect. A medical measure that is associated with a significant danger to life or health is not reasonable."
💥♟ Yes, there is a duty to tolerate in the Bundeswehr! But there is also the duty to maintain health and the duty of care of a superior towards his soldiers!
