Brief aus Brasilien: Die Medien und die tatsächliche Realität auf der Straße

Es war die mit Abstand größte Demonstration, die wir je gesehen und besucht haben: Am 7. September standen wir inmitten einer riesigen Menschenmenge in Sao Paulo. Um uns herum war ein Farbenmeer in Grün und Gelb - die Nationalfarben Brasiliens, in denen sich die Menschen kleideten.
Wie ist es dazu gekommen? Am 5. September erhielten wir eine Nachricht von einer brasilianischen Journalistin. Sie bat uns, Bilder und Videos von den Demonstrationen zum brasilianischen Unabhängigkeitstag am 7. September mit Europa zu teilen. Kurzerhand flogen wir am Montag, dem 6. September, selbst nach Sao Paulo.
Wir konnten der Welt direkt von der Bühne berichten, auf der der brasilianische Präsident Jair Bolsonaro zu Hunderttausenden seiner Landsleute sprach.
Im Vorfeld der Demonstrationen warnten die Massenmedien vor einer bevorstehenden Eskalation der Gewalt und sogar vor einem Putsch. […]

Letter from Brazil: The media and actual reality on the street

It was by far the biggest demonstration we have ever seen and attended: On September 7, we stood in the middle of a huge crowd in Sao Paulo. Around us was a sea of colors in green and yellow - the national colors of Brazil, in which the people dressed.
How did it come about? On September 5, we received a message from a Brazilian journalist. She asked us to share pictures and videos of the Brazilian Independence Day demonstrations on September 7 with Europe. Without further ado, we flew to Sao Paulo ourselves on Monday, September 6.
We were able to report directly to the world from the stage where Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro spoke to hundreds of thousands of his countrymen.
In the run-up to the demonstrations, the mass media warned of imminent escalations of violence and even of a coup. Nothing of the sort happened, which did not surprise us. The mood was peaceful, friendly and characterized by national pride - the latter only exists in Germany during major soccer events.
The Brazilian president, alternately portrayed in the European media as a supposed right-wing extremist, dictator or responsible for a Corona genocide, was frenetically celebrated by the crowd. Not only in Sao Paulo, but also earlier in the capital Brasilia and throughout the country. Many millions were in the streets. Imagine Angela Merkel inviting people to a speech at the Victory Column in Berlin on October 3. How many would come? How many would cheer?
Our interest was aroused and we tried to get an interview with the president through our contacts. We succeeded a few days later. We got to know a man who comes from the middle of the people and who stands up for his people. A man of clear words, conservative and anxious to ward off what he calls the communist threat to his country. A politician who regularly faces the questions of his people on his way to work in the morning.
Last week, we had a large number of interviews with members of parliament and ministers, who willingly answered our questions. One thing struck us in particular, in Brazil they speak plainly, politically "correct" and restrained expressions are rather rare. The minister of tourism showed us with the help of figures, how it really stands around the rainforest and the fantastic Brazilian nature. Two thirds of the country are still, to use his words, as they were in the days of Jesus Christ. 59 percent of the country's surface, almost 5 million square kilometers, are forested, the vast majority of which is still virgin forest untouched by man, and it should stay that way.
Brazil has managed to significantly increase its investment in infrastructure over the last two years despite the Corona crisis. Foreign capital is being attracted in a targeted manner, and there are also a variety of opportunities to invest in green bonds.
Masks as a symbol of the Corona measures are also omnipresent in Brazil in closed rooms, temperature measurements at the breakfast buffet and in the department store as well. However, people deal with the subject matter in a much more relaxed and friendly manner; people always remain human and respectful.
In terms of the image campaign, Brazil differs significantly from Germany. The mass of the population still obtains information from the mass media, so confidence in vaccination is very high and vaccination rates are correspondingly high.
The vaccination rate in Sao Paulo, for example, is now - according to official statistics - an (impossible) 104 percent, whereby foreigners have probably also been vaccinated. Irrespective of this, the experts we spoke to on the ground believe that a nationwide vaccination rate of over 90 percent is realistic in the end, and over 95 percent in the major cities.
But even at demonstrations for the president, who is himself unvaccinated and a big critic of vaccination, it is perfectly normal for a great many vaccinated people to participate there. There is no division between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.

Last weekend we attended two smaller demonstrations. One for and one against the president. At both demonstrations, we noticed that the protest posters were often in English, obviously to reach the international audience. On one poster of the pro Bolsonaro demonstration we even read the sentence, "Brazil is against communism" in German.
A few hours later, during the counter-protest, which was also very peaceful and manageable, we could notice a large number of red hammer and sickle flags. The symbol of Marxism-Leninism, which adorned and adorned the flags of many communist states. On the streets, however, it plays no relevant role.
