🎥20 February 1998. Venice in Movie Series.
Dangerous Beauty an American biographical drama film directed by Marshall Herskovitz and starring Catherine McCormack, Rufus Sewell, and Oliver Platt is released.
Entirely filmed in #Italy and mainly in Venice, the movie is based on the non-fiction book The Honest Courtesan by Margaret Rosenthal, about Veronica Franco, a courtesan in sixteenth-century Venice who becomes a hero to her city, but later the target of an inquisition by the Church for witchcraft.

#VeronicaFranco (1546–1591) was in fact a courtesan and a poet, known for her notable clientele, feminist advocacy, literary contributions, and philanthropy. Her humanist education and cultural contributions influenced the roles of Courtesans in the late Venetian #Renaissance.

📜 1 March.
"Cao de L'Ano" = New Year's Day.
No, I'm not yet (completely) crazy... in ancient Venice New Year's Day was on the 1rst of March and this uniqueness lasted until the 👉 end of the Venetian Republic in 1797.

This apparently bizarre mistake was in truth... the correct thing!
👉 Venice Republic adopted the ancient Roman calendar (abolished in 153 BC) according to which a year had 10 months (or periods), starting from Springtime (March). January and February did not exist.
That's why still today we have month names like September (=Sette, Seven), October (=Otto, Eight), November (=Nove, Nine), December (=Dieci, Ten).
The Gregorian Calendar (the one we all are used to) became the standard for every country after 1582..."more veneto" (= except Venice).

This city is unique in everything! 😉🤟❤️

🎥1 March 1971. Venice in Movie Series.
Death in Venice (original Italian title: Morte a Venezia) an Italian–French drama film directed in Panavision and Technicolor by Luchino Visconti, starring Dirk Bogarde and Björn Andrésen is released.
Based on the novella Death in Venice by the German author Thomas Mann, the film, despite raising controversies at the time in #Italy for treating subjects like homosexuality and adult love for adolescents, was considered a masterpiece.
💬 Plot. It's in fact the story of composer Gustav von Aschenbach who travels to Venice for rest, due to serious health concerns. In Venice, he becomes obsessed with the stunning beauty of an adolescent Polish boy named Tadzio, who is staying with his family at the same Grand Hôtel des Bains on the Lido as Aschenbach.
Entirely filmed in Venice and at the #Lido, Morte a Venezia has become in following years a symbol of poetic and romantic decadence... perfectly picturing that atmosphere in Venice Lido.

🎼9 March 1842. Giuseppe Verdi premières his Nabucco at Teatro La Scala in Milan.
🎼9 March 1844. Exactly 2 years later Verdi premières his Ernani at Teatro La Fenice in Venice.
These 2 are the most famous early works by #GiuseppeVerdi and establish him as the unrivaled Maestro of Italian Opera: worldwide known and appreciated for operas such as Nabucco, Macbeth, Rigoletto, Trovatore, Traviata, Don Carlos, Aida, Otello, Falstaff and for his sacred compositions, Verdi is still today sublimated by the numerous "Arias" and "Chorals" extracted from his operas and often perfomed all over the world.
Here I post a stunning performance 💓 at La Fenice in Venice of "Va, Pensiero, sull'Ali Dorate" from Nabucco, for sure one of the most representative songs for #Italy ever! Some say it should have become Italy's real national anthem.

📝 "It is always assumed that Venice is the ideal place for a honeymoon. This is a grave error. To live in Venice or even to visit it means that you fall in love with the city itself. There is nothing left over in your heart for anyone else."
