๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿ“6 February 1515. Italic (corsivo), the font type I'm using now to write this post, a standard way all over the world to emphasise key points in a printed text: the person who invented this font type was of course Italian ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡น and passed away in Venice on this day of 1515!
His name was Aldo Manuzio (internationally Aldus Manutius), born and raised near Rome where he studied to become one of the first press publisher ever: he moved to Venice invited by the Doge of the time and opened a printing press in Campo Sant'Agostin,

๐ŸŽญ Carnevale di Venezia, the oldest Carnival celebration in the world, starts this weekend!

Some brief facts for you:
- Carnival comes from the Italian word Carnevale and it's the religious period in Christianity which starts after Epiphany and lasts until Ash Wednesday, when Lent (in Italian Quaresima) begins. During Carnevale nutritional "excesses" were allowed and everyone could eat meat (Carne in Italian) and drink wine, as opposed to the Quaresima period (40 days before Easter) which had nutritional restrictions and fasting rules.
- #Carnevale as a folk celebration started in Venice in Medieval times (some historians say in 1162) to celebrate the city's war victories.
- Carnevale became an official celebration in Venice during the #Renaissance, making it a unique symbol and a pride of the city: wearing masks was not allowed anywhere in the world for centuries, even during Carnival time. Only Venice allowed and encouraged masks, as all kinds of licences and pleasures with no social class distinctions. That's why Venice Carnival became so popular and a huge attraction for all other countries.
- #VeniceCarnival was abolished and outlawed by the Austrians when they occupied the city in 1798 and the tradition got lost as years went by.
- After a long absence Venice Carnival returned only in 1979.

Dangerous Beauty an American biographical drama film directed by Marshall Herskovitz and starring Catherine McCormack, Rufus Sewell, and Oliver Platt is released.
Entirely filmed in #Italy and mainly in Venice, the movie is based on the non-fiction book The Honest Courtesan by Margaret Rosenthal, about Veronica Franco, a courtesan in sixteenth-century Venice who becomes a hero to her city, but later the target of an inquisition by the Church for witchcraft.

#VeronicaFranco (1546โ€“1591) was in fact a courtesan and a poet, known for her notable clientele, feminist advocacy, literary contributions, and philanthropy. Her humanist education and cultural contributions influenced the roles of Courtesans in the late Venetian #Renaissance.

"Cao de L'Ano" = New Year's Day.
No, I'm not yet (completely) crazy... in ancient Venice New Year's Day was on the 1rst of March and this uniqueness lasted until the ๐Ÿ‘‰ end of the Venetian Republic in 1797.

This apparently bizarre mistake was in truth... the correct thing!
๐Ÿ‘‰ Venice Republic adopted the ancient Roman calendar (abolished in 153 BC) according to which a year had 10 months (or periods), starting from Springtime (March). January and February did not exist.
That's why still today we have month names like September (=Sette, Seven), October (=Otto, Eight), November (=Nove, Nine), December (=Dieci, Ten).
The Gregorian Calendar (the one we all are used to) became the standard for every country after 1582..."more veneto" (= except Venice).

This city is unique in everything! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐ŸคŸโค๏ธ

Death in Venice (original Italian title: Morte a Venezia) an Italianโ€“French drama film directed in Panavision and Technicolor by Luchino Visconti, starring Dirk Bogarde and Bjรถrn Andrรฉsen is released.
Based on the novella Death in Venice by the German author Thomas Mann, the film, despite raising controversies at the time in #Italy for treating subjects like homosexuality and adult love for adolescents, was considered a masterpiece.
๐Ÿ’ฌ Plot. It's in fact the story of composer Gustav von Aschenbach who travels to Venice for rest, due to serious health concerns. In Venice, he becomes obsessed with the stunning beauty of an adolescent Polish boy named Tadzio, who is staying with his family at the same Grand Hรดtel des Bains on the Lido as Aschenbach.
Entirely filmed in Venice and at the #Lido, Morte a Venezia has become in following years a symbol of poetic and romantic decadence... perfectly picturing that atmosphere in Venice Lido.
