Venice #Mestre Clock Tower, the most ancient building and a symbol for the city.

πŸ“œ15 January 1623

400 years ago Paolo Sarpi
passed away in his birthplace, Venice.
One of those historical figures noone knows and remembers about, perhaps because his main activity was the pensatore ("the man who thinks").

#PaoloSarpi was a Venetian historian, prelate and statesman who spent his life defending the freedom of thought and speech of the Venetian Republic in defiance of the Papal interdict πŸ’ͺ🏻
Venice was in fact a Republic founded on secularism, it was of course a Catholic city as everywhere in #Italy, but never accepted religious interferences on government of public life!
As a defender of the liberties and proponent of the separation of Church and State, Sarpi got famous all over Europe as a hero of republicanism, later cited as an influential figure by philosophers of The Enlightenment!

Paolo Sarpi was friend to leaders of the "Scientific Revolution", such as Francis Bacon, William Harvey and most notably patron to
πŸ‘‰ Galileo!

A big "terremoto" (earthquake) probably the most devastating in #VeniceHistory, hits the city and all North East #Italy.
The earthquake caused 10 consecutive days of Acqua Granda (flood) and accelerated the spread of the "Peste Nera" (Black Plague).
Venice, at the time inhabited by 100.000 people lost 3 quarters of its population that year! 😱
The 25th of January became known for centuries among Venetians as β€œSan Paolo del terremoto” (after the Saint of the day).

From a local chronicle in those days:
β€œFu cosΓ¬ grande che scorlΓ² tutta la cittΓ  in modo tale che le campane sonavano da per loro, et caderono in terra i campanili di S. Silvestro, S. Vidal, S. Giacomo dall’Orio, S. Anzolo et la fazzada della chiesa di S. Basilio. DurΓ² diese giorni continui e tutto il popolo stava con grandissimo spavento”.

The Treaty of Karlowitz was signed in today's Serbia between the Holy League and the Ottoman Empire.
The Treaty ended the 16 year long Great Turkish War and the new borders between European and Ottoman countries were agreed.

Venice, which played an important role in the sea war victories thanks to the amazing strategic wit of the Doge #FrancescoMorosini who never lost a single battle, gained dominion of coastal territories such as Dalmatia and Morea (= Greek Peloponnesus) in addition to the islands of Crete and Cyprus already controlled.

It was the maximum expansion ever for Venice Republic!
The new Venetian administration was split into 3 entities: the Dogado (Venice city and surroundings), the Stato de Tera (lands in Northern Italy and Istria) and the Stato de Mar (Adriatic and Mediterranean coasts and islands).

This dominion on the Adriatic and Mediterranean area lasted until πŸ‘‰1797 when Napoleon came and put an end to the Serenissima Republic of Venice.

πŸ“œ It's always fun when I take American guests in my #WalkingTour in Venice and I tell them "We're starting from the Ghetto"...
Their reaction is always the same: "I don't wanna go to the ghetto" 😱
Why?
From Wikipedia: "Ghettos in the United States are typically urban neighborhoods perceived as being high in crime and poverty".

And it's always a surprise when I tell them that #Ghetto ("Gheto" in Venetian) is the name of a small island in Venice that became a worldwide used term since XVI century... they hardly believe me.

Then I tell them the story... do you know that?

Workplace Well-being

πŸ”– Definition
"Workplaces well-being is a key factor in determining an organisation's long-term effectiveness. Many studies show a direct link between productivity levels and the general health and well-being of the workforce.
Enterprises and organizations are increasingly recognising the need to take the well-being of their workers seriously."

My enterprise (Me, Myself and I) took that really seriously and is being well 🀟
πŸ“œ 22 March 1848

On that day the Republic of San Marco was established in Venice during the first Italian war of independence, following the insurrection of the city against the
πŸ‘‰ Austrian domination.

The main creator of the revolution and key figure of the new Republic was the Venetian lawyer Daniele Manin, who carried the surname of the πŸ‘‰ last Doge of Venice.
This was the most significant episode of the insurrection riots which took place all over #Italy in 1848. The Republic of San Marco survived few months until August 1849 when, after a strenuous resistance, the city returned under #Austria.
