πŸ“œ22 October 1866. Venice and the entire Veneto region are annexed to Italy (at the time Regno d'Italia, yes we had the king πŸ‘‘πŸ˜‰).
Venice was under Austria since 1797 (see more #VeniceHistory πŸ‘‰ here). After the many revolutionary episodes against foreign domination that took place all over the country during the 19th century, the Kingdom of Italy which unified most regions was born in 1861.
In 1866 #Italy declares war to #Austria in an attempt to militarily conquer Venice: despite the defeat or Italian troops, Austria gave Venice to #France which at the time politically supported the new born Kingdom of Italy. Venice was formally given to Italy on October 19, and soon after (21-22 October) a referendum was held for the Veneto population, which ended in a plebiscite with 674,426 votes in favor of the annexion and 69 against.

Many of you will remember this imposing statue☝️ here in Venice, in Riva degli Schiavoni, close to St. Mark. It's the Monument to the memory of King Vittorio Emanuele II and the victorious Venice erected in 1887.

🍹Spritz. To be honest there isn't much to remember about the decades of the Austrian domination in Venice: but #spritz (a German term in fact) originated in those years, because Austrian used to drink local wine diluted with sparkling water. The drink evolved and got popular in the following XX century thus becoming the typical Venetian drink with Aperol, Select or Campari... today an appreciated drink everywhere in the world, but in Venice it's always better (and cheaper) πŸ˜‰

🎼 πŸ“œ Maybe the oldest popular song in Venice language, dating back in 1600 😳, re-discovered in the 1960s and adapted to choral chants... here's the first performance ever recorded in the 1970s by the Venetian Coro Marmolada, with the stunning solo voice of Gondolier Giovanni Manzato (aka in Venice as "Nane Barche Rote")... it gives me shivers every time πŸ‘πŸ”

🎼 A more recent (2019) performance of Coro Marmolada at Scuola Grande di San Rocco, Venice.
The video that accompanies the choir tells what this traditional Venetian song is about: a lonely rower wandering around the Lagoon describes what he saw in his lifetime. ❀️

40 years ago RondΓ² Veneziano released their second and most succesful album: "La Serenissima".
The tunes contained in this album, in particular the titletrack, will remain forever associated with the international imagery of Venice β€οΈπŸ”

Rondò Veneziano is an Italian chamber orchestra, mostly composed by female musicians, specialized in Baroque music, playing original instruments 🎻 and incorporating a rock-style rhythm section of synthesizer, bass and drums.
Most of their music has been composed by founder and leader Maestro Gian Piero Reverberi (arranger and producer for many Italian acts in the 1970s, among them #LeOrme), along with Laura Giordano.

#RondoVeneziano sold millions of copies worldwide and they still today perform wearing Baroque-era attire and coiffeures. Photos and Music in the Chat RoomπŸ‘‡

πŸ“œπŸ’°30 October 1284.

The first gold Ducato was coined inside the Palazzo della Zecca in Venice #SanMarco by Doge Giovanni Dandolo (1280-1289).
This was the earliest Venetian currency and the value of 1 Ducato matched the value of 1 Fiorino, the currency of #Florence, at the time the most used in #Italy.
The engravings on the #Ducato represented Saint Mark handing the πŸ‘‰ Flag of Venice to Giovanni Dandolo.

Ducato was later renamed as Zecchino after the Palazzo della Zecca, πŸ‘‰ the palace you see on the right in this photo.
#Zecchino became for longtime the most used currency in commercial tradings in the Mediterranean area.

Antonio Canova
was born in Possagno (today in #Treviso province, at the time Republic Of Venice).
#Canova is considered the greatest Neoclassical artist, his marble sculptures are the most breathtaking symbols of perfection!
His most famous masterpieces are Amore e Psiche ("Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss") held at Louvre Museum in Paris and Le Tre Grazie ("The Three Graces") held at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg.

Here in Venice we can admire #AntonioCanova sculptures at Correr Museum in #SanMarco Square, but I strongly recommend to visit his Home Museum and Temple in his birthplace #Possagno: absolute magic! #1November

Canova passed away in Venice 200 years ago on 13 October 1822.
His body lies in his Temple in Possagno while his heart... πŸ‘‰ read more here
