πŸŽ₯30 September 1970. Venice in Movie Series.
Anonimo Veneziano (The Anonymous Venetian), Italian drama film written and directed by the famous Italian actor Enrico Maria Salerno is released. It starred American actor Tony Musante and Brazilian actress Florinda Bolkan. Entirely filmed in Venice, #AnonimoVeneziano is one of the few iconic movies in Venice history, also thanks to its amazing and unforgettable Soundtrack 🎼 by Stelvio Cipriani.

πŸ’¬ Plot: A Venetian musician is affected by an incurable disease. He arranges to meet his wife, who is now living with another man in another city, but does not tell her about his condition. They walk through the streets and channels of Venice. They remember the happy times when they lived together, she in blissful ignorance of his terminal illness. πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ¨5 October 1712. Francesco Guardi, one of the most famous Venetian painters was born in Venice.
Francesco Lazzaro Guardi was a nobleman and a member of the Venetian School. He is considered to be among the last practitioners of the classic Venetian school of painting.
He is famous for his "vedute" (views) but differently from those of his contemporary and much more famous #Canaletto which are like a proper photography, his #VeniceViews are evanescent and almost unreal.
It looks like the paintings of #Guardi met the music of his contemporary #Vivaldi: Venice at the peak of its magic!
Not many works of #FrancescoGuardi are held in Venice, the most famous ones are exhibited in other Italian and international museums: like the 3 in the above pictures☝️ which are visitable in Modena Galleria Estense, Paris Louvre, Bergamo Accademia Carrara.
His portrait was made by another great Venetian artist, #PietroLonghi and is held inside the Ca' Rezzonico 1700 Museum in Venice.

πŸ“œβš”7 October 1571. One of the most important dates in Europe history! The Holy League composed by the armies of the Pope, the Spanish and the Venetians, defeated the Ottoman Empire armies in the epic naval Battle of Lepanto, ancient name of an island in Greece.

πŸ“œ8 October 1094. The remains of the Saint Mark Evangelist are definitively placed in the crypt of the Basilica of San Marco, built for the third time since 828 AD and at the time called "The Golden Church": San Marco's body is hidden in a marble tomb at the time known only by the Doge and the Procurators of San Marco to avoid stealings. The solemn ceremony is held in presence of the Holy Roman Emperor Henry IV.

πŸ“œ 8 October 1451.
San Pietro in Castello becomes the first site of a Patriarch in Venice.
Before that, Venice was "under" the Patriarch (= Catholic bishop) of Grado, today a town and seaside resort in Friuli Venezia Giulia region.
It took more than 350 years (right after the πŸ‘‰ fall of the Republic) to move the Patriarch from San Pietro in Castello to the actual #SanMarco site.
The first Patriarch of Venice was Lorenzo Giustiniani and, to confirm the uniqueness of this city, he was nominated by the Republic Senate, not by the Church.

San Pietro in #Castello, with its leaning tower πŸ“Έβ˜οΈ, is one of the most secluded islands of Venice, absolutely out of the touristy trails...
therefore included in my #WalkingTour πŸ˜‰

πŸ“œ17 October 1797. With the Treaty of Campoformio, a small town in #Friuli region, #Napoleon sells (or gives away) Venice and its region to the Austrian, at the time still leading nation of the so called Sacred Roman Empire (which will be extinct in 1806).
Napoleon conquered Venice just few months before (see more story πŸ‘‰ here) but he wasn't much interested in the city (apart from stealing everything he could from Venetian palaces), so he used it as a bargain for his expansionist aims.
The Austrian troops entered in Venice at the beginning of 1798, the entire Venetian region stayed under #Austria domination until 1866.

Β«Il sacrificio della patria nostra Γ¨ consumato: tutto Γ¨ perduto; e la vita, seppure ne verrΓ  concessa, non ci resterΓ  che per piangere le nostre sciagure, e la nostra infamia."

🎼16 October 1982.
40 years ago Mario Del Monaco, one of the most representative and popular tenors of the 1950s and 1960s passed away in Venice #Mestre.
Del Monaco was born in #Florence in 1915 and spent most of his lifetime in Venice.
Like #Pavarotti had his signature "aria" in Nessun Dorma, #DelMonaco was unrivaled in E Lucevan Le StelleπŸ‘‡
An anecdote few know: Donella Del Monaco, the tenor's nephew and opera singer herself, became the #vocalist and lyricist of Opus Avantra, an obscure Italian avant-garde progressive rock band of early 1970s (I post a song in the Chat Room).

πŸŽ₯19 October 1983. Venice in Movie Series.
The Key (Italian: La Chiave), an Italian erotic film directed by Tinto Brass is released. Completely set in Venice, the movie arose big scandal at the time because it contains several explicit shots of nudity and sex scenes involving the well-known actress and protagonist Stefania Sandrelli.
πŸ’¬ Plot: In the early months of 1940 Venice was under the fascist regime: a voluptuous woman in her forties is unable to respond to her husband but undergoes a belated sexual awakening with her daughter's fiancΓ©, which enables her to please her husband at last.
La Chiave was the film which permantely established #TintoBrass as the erotic director icon in #Italy collective imagery from the 1980s onwards, after that many erotic and scandalous movies by Brass would follow.

πŸ“œ22 October 1866. Venice and the entire Veneto region are annexed to Italy (at the time Regno d'Italia, yes we had the king πŸ‘‘πŸ˜‰).
Venice was under Austria since 1797 (see more #VeniceHistory πŸ‘‰ here). After the many revolutionary episodes against foreign domination that took place all over the country during the 19th century, the Kingdom of Italy which unified most regions was born in 1861.
In 1866 #Italy declares war to #Austria in an attempt to militarily conquer Venice: despite the defeat or Italian troops, Austria gave Venice to #France which at the time politically supported the new born Kingdom of Italy. Venice was formally given to Italy on October 19, and soon after (21-22 October) a referendum was held for the Veneto population, which ended in a plebiscite with 674,426 votes in favor of the annexion and 69 against.
In the painting above☝️King Vittorio Emanuele II enters Venice with a parade on the #GrandCanal acclaimed by all citizens on 7 November 1866.

Many of you will remember this imposing statue☝️ here in Venice, in Riva degli Schiavoni, close to St. Mark. It's the Monument to the memory of King Vittorio Emanuele II and the victorious Venice erected in 1887.

🍹Spritz. To be honest there isn't much to remember about the decades of the Austrian domination in Venice: but #spritz (a German term in fact) originated in those years, because Austrian used to drink local wine diluted with sparkling water. The drink evolved and got popular in the following XX century thus becoming the typical Venetian drink with Aperol, Select or Campari... today an appreciated drink everywhere in the world, but in Venice it's always better (and cheaper) πŸ˜‰

🎼 πŸ“œ Maybe the oldest popular song in Venice language, dating back in 1600 😳, re-discovered in the 1960s and adapted to choral chants... here's the first performance ever recorded in the 1970s by the Venetian Coro Marmolada, with the stunning solo voice of Gondolier Giovanni Manzato (aka in Venice as "Nane Barche Rote")... it gives me shivers every time πŸ‘πŸ”
