πŸ“œ25 June 1678.
On this day Venice became (once more) the first city in the world to witness an absolute conquest!

πŸ‘‰ Read the incredible story of Elena Corner, the first woman in the world admitted to a University degree!

πŸ“œ29 June 965. San Pietro in Volta was born on the island of #Pellestrina, one of the most remote and secluded inhabited places of Venice Lagoon (see map☝️).
One of the main reasons Venice grew and expanded so much in Medieval centuries was to escape the Barbarians frequent invasions.
In 915 the Hungarians, after having devastated the mainland, were defeated by Venetians in Pellestrina island while attempting to assault Venice. πŸ’ͺ
In memory of the victory, about fifty years later (29 June 965) a Church dedicated to St. Peter was built. The whole place was named San Pietro in Volta, where "in volta" stands for "on the run", with reference to the Hungarian armies escaping. It was the main and last attempt by Barbarians to invade and dominate the island.
After that Venice would be safe and free to become the most important city of the Mediterranean area.

πŸ“œ14 July 1902. Few know and remember this date, even here in Venice, maybe because the tallest building of the city has been masterfully rebuilt in all its splendour! πŸ’ͺ
But on the morning of this day, one of the most famous symbols of Venice since XIII century, the Campanile of #SanMarco ("el paron de casa", the city landlord, as Venetians called it) collapsed!
The poor and irreparable situation of the building was already known for years, that's why a tragedy was avoided by erecting wooden barricades to keep visitors and onlookers at a safe distance. The collapse of the building was also a sort of miracle in its perfection πŸ˜‡πŸ˜³. St. Mark's Square and all its masterpieces (Doge's Palace, The Basilica, The Clock Tower, The Procuratie) were in fact almost untouched because the Campanile collapsed on itself (see πŸ“Έβ˜οΈ).
The tower we all know and admire today was rebuilt in 8 years, opened and blessed by Venice Patriarch on 15 June 1910. An elevator to reach the tower top was first installed in 1962.
