Telecommunications in India is regulated by two primary entities: the โ Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ“ก

While TRAI is the independent statutory regulator (established by the โ TRAI Act, 1997), it does not handle everything. ๐Ÿ›
The division of power is as follows: โš–๏ธ
โ Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI): It operates as a statutory bodyโ€”not a self-regulatory organization (SRO)โ€”tasked with protecting consumer interests, ensuring fair competition, and fixing tariffs, quality of service benchmarks, and broadcasting regulations. ๐Ÿ‘ฅ๐Ÿ“‰
Department of Telecommunications (DoT): As a government department under the
โ Ministry of Communications, the DoT is the sole licensor. It holds the actual licensing power, handles spectrum assignments, and executes broader telecommunications policies. ๐Ÿข๐Ÿ“ก
If a dispute arises between a service provider and a consumer or licensor, that is handled by a separate adjudicatory body called the
โ Telecommunications Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT).โš–๏ธ๐Ÿ›
