Vashaan Music Society and Caravan World Rhythms present a concert of joyful traditional and folk music from Iran with an emphasis of rare music from the Sistan and Baluchistan region. The Vashaan Ensemble is a gathering of some of the finest classically trained Persian musicians working outside Iran. The group was formed in 2011 in order to draw upon Iran’s rich musical past to perform and celebrate the lively and distinctive folk music Southeastern Iran.

«Vashaan» is a Baluchi word, meaning, happiness, immense joy, hope and optimism. The Vashaan Ensemble concentrates its efforts on discovering, arranging, producing and performing some of the most joyful and memorable songs of the traditional and folk music of Iran.

Baluchi Music
Part of this concert will be devoted to the presentation of the extremely rare Baluchi tradition. The Baluch nation is composed of about 500 tribes with a population of over 5 million individuals. The extreme variations in Baluchistan’s climate and environment, in addition to its unique demographic structure have contributed to the creation of its rich and versatile musical traditions. In Baluchistan, perhaps more than any other place in the world, music and poetry reflect the true cultural, social, and political identity of a nation. Customs, historic events, tragedies and love stories have been passed from one generation to another, predominantly by Baluchi bards and epic singers. Reza and Fathieh Honari grew up in this region and studied and performed this music with many masters of these traditions. Their aim is to help preserve this music and present it to new audiences in Canada.

Bringing Music to New Audiences:

Vashaan believes that it is important to give the Canadian public more positive experiences with Iranian Culture. The beauty and expressiveness of this music is important to bring to a Western versed Canadian audience. Although this music comes from a very remote part of the world, it is still relevant to all listeners as it deals with universal themes that hold true for all people.
The concert will feature music composed by members of the ensemble. It will feature poetry of Rumi, Khayyam, and Hafez. There will be something for everyone who enjoys music from Iran & the middle east. Come join Vashaan’s celebration of the diversity of Iranian music.
