Now let us talk about something more important than closing a project.
Keeping the client.
Most freelancers focus on finding new work.
The real leverage is keeping existing clients.
One long term client can be worth more than ten short term projects.
So how do you convert short term clients into long term ones?
First, response time.
Be fast.
Fast replies build trust.
When clients feel they do not have to chase you, stress goes down.
Second, give updates.
Do not disappear for days and then suddenly deliver.
Send updates at milestones.
Let them know what is done.
What is in progress.
What comes next.
Clarity reduces anxiety.
Third, be flexible with timing when possible.
If a client prefers communication during certain hours, try to align.
Removing friction makes you easier to work with.
Fourth, be proactive with urgent issues.
If something breaks or something critical happens, handle it quickly.
Clients remember who showed up when it mattered.
Fifth, underpromise and overdeliver.
Do not promise miracles.
Deliver slightly more than expected.
Small surprises build big loyalty.
But there is a warning here.
If you do all this without boundaries, you will burn out.
Always available.
Always replying.
Always fixing.
That is not sustainable.
The solution is structure and, eventually, a team.
Distribute workload.
Avoid burnout.
Support clients consistently.
Long term client relationships are built on:
Speed.
Clarity.
Reliability.
Stability.
When clients feel stable working with you, they stop shopping around.

Why are some freelancers more successful than others?
The difference is simple, they never stop learning.
Successful freelancers know that growth comes from constantly improving their skills, even in small ways.
You don’t need to learn everything at once.
Just focus on learning something new every day.
Over time, those small improvements turn into bigger opportunities and better clients.
React if you agree.

Big Update from Upwork for Freelancers!
Starting May 28, 2026, Upwork will remove Specialized Profiles.
Instead of choosing different profiles for different jobs, your main profile will automatically highlight the most relevant work experience for each opportunity.
What this means for freelancers:
• No more switching between specialized profiles
• Your best and most relevant work will be prioritized automatically
• Clients will see the most relevant projects and skills first
• One strong profile will matter more than ever
What freelancers should do now:
🔣 Update your portfolio projects
🔣 Optimize your skills and keywords
🔣 Make sure your best work is clearly showcased
🔣 Keep your profile description focused and niche-specific
This change could actually simplify the hiring process and make it easier for clients to find the right talent quickly.
For freelancers, the strategy now is simple:
Build one powerful profile that clearly communicates your expertise.
Curious to see how this impacts proposals and client discovery on the platform.

Most freelancers aren’t struggling because of the platform.
They’re struggling because of how they approach it.
Here are some small habits that helped me.
🔸 I don’t apply to most jobs
Early on, I used to apply to everything.
Big mistake.
Now I only apply if:
→ The client has real spending history
→ The problem is clearly explained
→ The project fits exactly what I do
Sometimes I skip 20–30 jobs before sending one proposal.
But that one proposal has a much higher chance of closing.
🔸 I read the client profile first
Before even opening the job post, I check:
→ Total spend
→ Average hourly rate paid
→ Number of hires
→ Feedback from freelancers
If the client has never paid anyone well, that usually doesn’t change.
🔸 My proposals are short
Most freelancers send long proposals.
Clients don’t read them.
My structure is usually simple:
→ One sentence showing I understand the problem
→ One short example of similar work
→ One clear next step
That’s it.
Short messages often get more replies.
🔸 I focus on one core skill
A lot of freelancers try to offer everything.
Clients prefer specialists.
🔸 I focus on long-term clients.

You must have heard by now that Upwork is removing Specialized Profiles after May 28.
Ironically, this is one of those changes that does not really affect me or most of the freelancers I have worked with, because I have been discouraging people from using this feature from the very day it was introduced.
The key to success on Upwork is often simplicity.
Not every feature needs to be utilized.
When Specialized Profiles first came out, there were several issues.
One of the early bugs was that when someone clicked on your specialized profile, it opened your main profile instead of the specialized one. Naturally this confused clients because they expected to land on a profile tailored to that niche. That bug eventually got fixed.
But then another issue appeared not long ago.
When you sent a proposal, instead of showing the specialized profile title, the system sometimes showed your main profile title. That created a different kind of confusion. The title of your profile is one of the first things a client sees when reviewing proposals. If the title does not match the job they posted, many clients will simply skip the proposal. In that situation freelancers were essentially wasting Connects.
Another common problem was inconsistent positioning.
Freelancers would often set different hourly rates across profiles. On their main profile they would list one rate, and on a specialized profile that looked almost identical they would list another. Clients would notice the mismatch and start wondering which one is correct.
Titles were often poorly optimized as well.
There was also a usability issue. When a client opens your profile, the first thing that appears prominently is the list of specialized profiles. Since we naturally read left to right, that section can become a distraction. It forces the client to spend extra seconds deciding which profile to open before even understanding what you actually do.
In today’s environment, where everyone scrolls quickly and attention spans are short, those extra seconds matter. Many clients will simply move on to another freelancer instead of analyzing multiple profiles.
There is also the platform side of things.
Upwork, like any large platform, is constantly trying to reduce operational costs. Features that consume infrastructure resources but do not deliver strong return on investment eventually get removed. Specialized profiles fell into that category.
Of course, the feature did work for some freelancers.
But most people who came to me for profile reviews had their results improve after removing specialized profiles, simplifying their positioning, and focusing on one clear message.
Sometimes the best optimization is simply removing complexity and thinking from the client's perspective.
