A message usually pops up whenever a client clicks on your profile to hire you which discourages them from doing so.
To avoid this, try to verify your identity.
Take a look at this example below. I wanted to hire a Freelancer and Upwork showed me this on the screenshot.
As you can see, Upwork gave me the option to choose another freelancer immediately.

Since I keep repeating the same feedback, I decided to create this post to share with everyone who asks.
🔍 Let’s break down a poorly optimized profile from a client’s perspective (yes, I also hire on Upwork):
👤 Profile Picture
➡️ Use a clear, smiling photo that shows most of your face. First impressions matter.
🎯 Profile Title
➡️ Be specific. Avoid generic titles like "PHP Developer".
✅ Better: "WordPress Theme & Plugin Developer | PHP Developer"
This tells clients exactly what service you provide and helps them decide to click your profile.
📝 Profile Description
➡️ Start with the services you offer, not "I am this/I am that".
Your first two lines appear in search make them count!
📂 Specialized Profiles
➡️ Keep them within your core niche.
Wrong: WordPress + Video Editing + Digital Marketing
Right:
WordPress Theme Developer
WordPress Plugin Developer
WordPress Security Expert
Otherwise, you look like a jack of all trades, master of none.
💡 Important Note
Even the best profile won’t help if your proposal is weak.
✔️ Focus on writing custom, relevant proposals
✔️ Be proactive don’t just wait for invites

HOW TO SPOT SUSPICIOUS CLIENTS
Before you respond to any invite as a $0-earning freelancer, especially if you haven’t applied to the job, look for these red flags:
The client is new with no hiring history.
The client registered recently but has already hired and paid many freelancers.
You receive an offer without any prior conversation.
The client wants to communicate outside Upwork.
They send external links or .exe files.
The client is new with no hiring history and has posted multiple similar jobs.
BE CAREFUL NOT EVERY INVITE IS A GOOD OPPORTUNITY
This doesn’t mean every invite to a new freelancer is a scam. But if you’re getting messages without spending Connects, take a moment to evaluate who’s contacting you and why.
