Gs-4 : Ethics- Role of Ethics in politics
๐ พ๏ธThe central conflict is between what is effective in the short term and what is right in the long term.
๐Public institutions exist to serve human dignity. If citizens become mere numbers, vote banks, targets, or collateral damage, ethics has failed.
๐Thinkers
โ๏ธAristotle viewed politics as pursuit of the good life.
โ๏ธGandhi held that impure means cannot produce pure ends.
โ๏ธRawls argued institutions must be fair to the weakest.
โ๏ธAmbedkar warned that constitutional morality must sustain democracy.
๐Final take away :When power loses its moral compass, authority may survive temporarily, but legitimacy eventually decays. Politics without ethics can command obedience, but it cannot command respect.

Gs-4 : Ethics- Bioethics/environmental ethics
๐ฐQ) โIs culling of invasive species ethically justified? Discuss.โ
๐Background : Pablo Escobar- a drug dealer imported these hippos in colombia- they dont belong there- so they disturbed the ecological balance of that region.
โDilemma : Killing animals is morally wrong irrespective of outcome vs Strongest justification for culling comes from ecocentric ethics- which side should you take?= utilitarian vs deontological conflict
๐ พ๏ธWhat would a responsible decision-maker do?- Virtue ethics
โ๏ธCourage โ take difficult decisions
โ๏ธ Prudence โ rely on science
โ๏ธ Compassion โ minimise suffering
โ ๏ธWhen human-induced ecological imbalance threatens broader biodiversity and human safety, ethical responsibility shifts from preserving individual lives to restoring systemic balance.
๐ โCompassion towards hippos without responsibility can become injustice for environment.

๐ พ๏ธA district administration is asked to identify undocumented migrants in a communally sensitive border district. Local political groups are spreading rumours that one religious community is responsible for demographic change. As District Magistrate, what steps will you take?

โ๏ธ2. Border control vs human dignity
โ๏ธ3. Majority anxiety vs minority rights
โ๏ธ4. Political pressure vs administrative neutrality

Gs-4 : Environmental Ethics-Great Nicobar project
๐ พ๏ธVery interesting point - JUSTIFIED vs JUST
๐Justified means legally approved, strategically useful, economically viable or administratively cleared.Just means morally defensible, constitutionally fair, ecologically responsible and respectful of vulnerable communities.
โ ๏ธPublic Trust Doctrine- The State holds natural resources in trust for people and future generations. It cant treat forests, coasts and tribal habitats as vacant land for development
โAlso note the Historical Injustice- The article links this to colonial ideas of discovery and settlement, where lands were treated as empty because indigenous people were politically weak
โ๏ธThe Great Nicobar debate shows that in a constitutional democracy, public purpose cannot be measured only by strategic gain or economic return. Development becomes just only when the weakest communities and the most fragile ecosystems are not treated as expendable costs.
๐ฐMy conclusion- Read here-Mata Bhumih Putroham

Gs-4 : Ethics- Bartz vs anthropic- AI firms allegedly purchase books, remove their bindings, scan them rapidly and thereby make the physical copies unusable.
๐ พ๏ธIssue : Can something legally purchased be ethically destroyed when society may possess an interest in its continued existence?
โ ๏ธHow to view this from various ethical POVs?
1. Utilitarianism : Digitise where socially beneficial, but minimise irreversible destruction.
2. Deontology : Good consequences do not automatically legitimise irresponsible means.
3. Virtue ethics:Relevant virtues are:

โ๏ธStewardship: treat historically significant works as inherited knowledge rather than disposable inputs.
โ๏ธResponsibility: anticipate unintended consequences.

โ GS-2: Constitution, Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles, federalism and government interventions.

โ๏ธAlso note that in 2018: The 21st Law Commissionโs Consultation Paper on Reform of Family Law favours removing discrimination within family laws rather than pursuing a UCC at that stage. Its position was time-qualified, not a permanent constitutional prohibition
