Could Telegram be blocked in Russia?

Telegram could be under threat in Russia, after the popular messaging app refused to hand over data to Russian authorities.

“No other government or special service in the world has ever received a single bit of data from us,” the company said in a statement yesterday, “That will always be the case.”

This defiant statement comes after reports on Monday that Russian media watchdog Roskomnadzor had requested information from Telegram, to be registered in a government-controlled national database.

Under Russian law, any service that refuses to comply with such government orders is liable to be blacklisted. Telegram would be far from the first messaging app to fall foul of orders to provide company data — this month has already seen BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), VChat, LINE and Imo.im blocked for failing to hand over information.

Facebook fined $122 million by EU for ‘misleading information’ about WhatsApp acquisition

The European Commission has fined Facebook €110 million ($122 million) for “providing incorrect or misleading information” about its 2014 acquisition of WhatsApp.

In a press release published Thursday, the Commission said that the social media company misinformed European regulators when it said that it would be unable to link the profiles of users on WhatsApp and Facebook. In 2016, however, WhatsApp announced that it would begin sharing some user data, including phone numbers, with Facebook. In its decision, the Commission said that “the technical possibility of automatically matching Facebook and WhatsApp users' identities already existed in 2014, and that Facebook staff were aware of such a possibility.”

Update

Some technology websites wrote articles about our article concerning fake reviews for WhatsApp.
One of these websites is The Next Web, they also reached out to WhatsApp for further comment and WhatsApp has provided the following statement:

"We’re focused on making our service better for our 1.2 billion users around the world. We don’t have time for fake reviews, and we’ve reached out to Google to look into the issue."

While it remains unclear who’s behind the allegedly fake ratings, AppAnnie told TNW the data provided is indeed authentic, but did not offer any input as to the legitimacy of the reviews:

"App Annie’s Store Stats tool presents reviews publicly available on the app stores. These reviews are collated for easier reporting, making trends easier to see in one view; the interpretations of these trends are subjective so we cannot comment on this particular editorial hypothesis."
