I am often asked about how to watch TV Series correctly. Since you're interested in learning a new language and improving your listening and speaking skills, here are some techniques for you to improve them by watching TV shows and listening to podcasts.

Personally, I would recommend you to use headphones while you are dealing with listening. The reasons why would you have to do this is a lot. One of them is when you are taking the IELTS listening test, you're provided with headphones. For doing your best in the real exam, you should get used to listen more (with headphones)

Secondly, if you are a beginner in the listening field, I would suggest you to watch the TV series with subtitles on it. Since you are a beginner you should be capable of understanding a context through subtitles. Without subtitles your listening might not grow rapidly.

Thirdly, try to watch what you like to watch. What i mean by this is that, if you are a fan of being a lawyer maybe you should watch some serials which are related to law. (e.g "Suits" "Recruit" "How to get away with murder") The reason behind is that, you will not even realize that you are learning English or improving your listening score, if you are watching what you really want to watch.

Do not spend your time learning a new vocabulary that you came across while watching. If you are going to do this it will take a lot of time to remember and actually use them in your speech. Instead, watch, even though you do not understand 100%. After a while, your level will be higher and you will learn by heart tons of words from your English course. Eventually, you are definitely going to be good at listening and understand natural speech.

How many hours should you spend for watching TV shows?
Well, I tell my elementary students to watch an episode every single day. Yeah, maybe you think it's not enough, however, when these students watch only one episode each day they will be watching 31 episodes per month. It means they will end up their month with finishing one serial or a show.
But, if you are a high level student? How many hours do you have to watch?
At least 4 hours a day!

While watching and listening, try to write down or make notes from shows that you think will be useful for you to use them in your speaking. In my case, when I was a student, I used to write down some collocations, phrasal verbs and of course expressions. (e.g honestly, to be honest, without a doubt, end up, keep in mind, chill out etc.)

Overall, do not be worried about results, just focus on the process!
