It was a counterintelligence operation of the of the Soviet Union. The operation ran from 1921 to 1927 set up a fake anti-Bolshevik resistance organisation, the MUCR in order to help the OGPU identify real monarchists and anti-Bolsheviks.

They used highly effective propaganda to make it seem like a mass movement of people was organically emerging to overthrow the Soviets and Restore the Monarchy.

The group was headed by Alexander Yakushev, a former Imperial bureaucrat who was coerced into becoming a Soviet double agent.

Prominent opponents were lured back into Russia and tens of thousands of dissidents were identified who were then sent to the Gulags.

The 'patriots' thought they were in control and an army was amassing in the East of Russia.

None of these things were true.

By the time the operation was dismantled in 1927, the Soviet secret police had severely crippled the global anti-Soviet opposition and thoroughly compromised several Western intelligence networks.

Operation Trust remains widely studied as one of the most successful disinformation and deception campaigns in intelligence history.

So the biggest victim of her husbands actions is Nicola Sturgeon.
