Signs warning people not to swim are in place at almost all of England's official river bathing sites due to concerns the water could be unsafe from contamination from bacteria linked to human and animal faeces.

An 18 year old White student was violently stabbed to death with an “extremely large" shastar knife on his way home from a night out, a court has been told.

Vickrum Digwa, a Sikh, had a 21cm shastar - the Punjabi word for weapon or knife - Digwa also had a kirpan knife around his neck and under his clothing.

"Sikhism obliges male followers of the faith to carry and wear certain items, these include a wooden comb, a metal bangle and what is called a kirpan, a ceremonial knife." said the prosecutor.

"That small kirpan satisfies any religious obligation a Sikh may have to carry a blade, and was carrying that under his clothing and around his neck."
