A man who "furiously and repeatedly" stabbed an 11-year-old girl during a random attack in London's Leicester Square has been detained indefinitely.
The Australian child was approached by Ioan Pintaru, 33, after she left the Lego store around 11.30am on 12 August 2024 with her mother.
The defendant placed the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in a headlock and stabbed her eight times in the face, neck and chest.
The victim's mother told police she saw Pintaru "furiously and repeatedly" attacking her daughter.
In a witness statement read out in court, she described his arm as moving "like a jackhammer", using "as much force as he could".
The mother added she thought he was "trying to kill her" and he was "wide-eyed and manic like nothing was going to stop him".
Pintaru originally faced an attempted murder charge, but the prosecution decided his psychosis at the time of the offence meant it could not be proven he had an intent to kill, the court heard.

โHe'll walk over in my direction and say, โHey you, where are you from?โ
โAnd you know, you ask a question, but before I could even give out an answer, I had, โThat's the way back to Africa.โ
โAnd for me it happened once, okay, happened a second time, then a third time.โ

Thousands of drivers could have speeding fines cancelled after a fault saw some cameras falsely triggered on English motorways and A roads.
And tens of thousands of drivers will have speed awareness courses cancelled as the government orders National Highways to look back at six years of speed camera data.
National Highways said it had found 2,650 wrongful speed camera activations since 2021 due to a delay between cameras and variable speed signs.
Not all camera activations are enforced, so not all of the wrongful activations will have resulted in fines.
Affected drivers will be contacted by police and be reimbursed for any fines while points will be removed from their licences where needed.
More than 36,000 drivers have been told by police their speed awareness courses are being cancelled as a precaution while the speed camera issue is investigated.
