A brass memorial plaque for a Scottish Holocaust victim is to be unveiled later in the centre of Edinburgh.

The Stolperstein stone has been laid outside St Stephen's Church in Stockbridge, where a service was held for Jane Haining in June 1932 before she travelled to Budapest to work as a matron.

The Stolperstein, or "stumbling block", is a small brass plaque set into the pavement to someone persecuted by the Nazis, serving as a personal and lasting memorial.

The United Kingdom will deny entry to visitors without an Electronic Travel Authorisation, ETA, effective February 25, 2026, the government announced on Monday.

The rule affects nationals from 85 countries, including the United States, Canada, and France, who ordinarily do not need a visa to enter the United Kingdom.

According to the Home Office, the enforcement is a significant step towards digitising the immigration system and paving the way for a contactless border in the future.

Under the scheme, everyone who wants to visit the UK must have digital permission through either an ETA or an eVisa.

An Albanian man accused of wielding a chainsaw at cops whom he allegedly chased down a busy street was not offered an interpreter or a solicitor before he was charged by detectives, a court has heard.


Liridon Kastrati, 32, is accused of ramming a car into a marked police vehicle and then brandishing a chainsaw at police officers in Paisley, Renfrewshire, in broad daylight on May 6 2024.


It is alleged Kastari stole a black Volkswagen car and drove it “at excessive speed”, before mounting the pavement and colliding with a police car containing two officers at around 1.30pm.

He has denied attempting to murder four officers, breach of the peace and motoring offences. On Monday, the High Court in Paisley heard that Kastrati spoke “broken English” but was not offered an interpreter,

Detective Constable Stephen Solomon confirmed that Kastrati was not offered a consultation with a solicitor before being charged, and was not offered an Albanian interpreter.

A landscape gardener is facing life in jail after a jury took less than 27 minutes to find him guilty of breaking the neck of his teacher lover when she threatened to leave him.

In harrowing testimony, filmed from her hospital bed in intensive care, Ms Burgess described hearing her spine crack and her body gradually becoming numb immediately afterwards.

Easom admitted causing the injury, which has left Ms Burgess a tetraplegic and needing round-the-clock care, but denied intending to cause her serious harm, telling police: 'I love Trudi more than life itself.'

Police have appealed for information after a man was charged with murdering two women and raping a third.

Simon Levy has been charged with murdering 53-year-old Carmenza Valencia-Trujillo, from Colombia, who died on the Aylesbury Estate, south-east London, on 17 March, the Metropolitan Police said.

A police investigation was launched after a post-mortem examination was unable to determine a cause of death.

Levy, of Beaufoy Road, Tottenham, north London, was previously charged in September with murdering 39-year-old Sheryl Wilkins who was found unresponsive in High Road, Tottenham, on 24 August.

He is also accused of grievous bodily harm with intent, non-fatal strangulation and two counts of rape against a third woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, in Haringey, north London, on 21 January, police said.

The 40-year-old will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Tuesday charged with Ms Valencia-Trujillo's murder.

Reports of a "board-level orchestrated coup" at the BBC are "complete nonsense", non-executive director Sir Robbie Gibb has told MPs.

Sir Robbie, whose position on the BBC board has been challenged by critics in recent weeks, was among senior leaders, including the broadcaster's chair, Samir Shah, to face questions from the Culture, Media and Sport committee about the current crisis.

Scottish comedian Hardeep Singh Kohli has appeared in court, in private, charged with rape.

The 56-year-old is further accused of an offence against the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act.

Mr Kohli made no plea to the two charges at the private hearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He was committed for further examination and released on bail by Sheriff Bernard Ablett. His next court appearance is to be determined.

A teenage boy is in a life-threatening condition after being shot in Sheffield.

Police said the 16-year-old was taken to hospital after suffering a gunshot wound on Monday evening.

The incident happened shortly before 5.20pm in London Road.
