Aleksandr Beliavsky (b. Lvov, 1953), pictured in 1975, the year he gained his GM title. He had already won the Soviet championship (shared with Mikhail Tal, in 1974), and would go on to win or share the title again in 1980/81, 1987 & 1990.

(He had a liking for those jumpers even then...)

Stockholm, 20th August 1969. The 3rd round of the World Junior Championship, 'A' final. The encounter between Anatoly Karpov (USSR) & Ulf Andersson (Sweden). Karpov won this game on the way to taking the title.

Moscow, Oct 1973 - the 41st USSR Championship. Aleksandr Beliavsky is seen in play during the adjourned session of his game v. Karen Grigorian.
Beliavsky finished last in this, his first final. The next year he was co-champion, with Mikhail Tal.
