The black king is pretty unsafe at the moment in the center, and White is threatening to start a pawn march with e5-d6. Giri employs an imaginative maneuver to block the pawns and at the same time restrict the bishop.
1...Kd6!
The knight goes to e5, and the black king is perfectly placed on d6. White does not have pieces to attack along the dark squares.
2.a3 Qa4 3.Rd3 b5 4.Rc3 Rhc8 =/+
And ...b4 is coming, opening the queenside!

Once again, prophylactic thinking needs to be applied in order to find the best move here for White. What does Black want to play? ...e4!, restricting the white knights and opening a dangerous diagonal for the c7-bishop.
1.Bxc8! Raxc8 2.e4! +/-
Just in time! White will be the owner of all the light squares (f5, d5, c4) and is looking at a scenario where the knight is much better than the bishop.
