During past eleven years from 2005 onwards, he has won the Capablanca memorial (a record for their tournament history) 7 times (out of 8 appearances) in which he has participated in it, including one tied share of 1st with Le Quang Liem (before tie-breaks were applied) in 2011.

Also in 1988, he came equal first at the World Junior Chess Championship in Adelaide, although Joel Lautier won the title on tiebreak. 1988 also saw him win his GM title.
