β¦οΈ Anandβs first tilt at the World Championship cycle took place during the last of the traditional FIDE cycles that had been established after World War II, albeit a cycle cut short at the final by Kasparovβs split from FIDE in 1993. Anand kicked off his world championship campaign when he won the gold medal at the 1990 Asian Zonal Championship, qualifying for the Manila Interzonal later that year. In 1991, he defeated Alexey Dreev in Chennai in the first round of Candidates matches, but lost to Anatoly Karpov in Brussels in the quarter finals.

A very interesting pawn sacrifice. The first intention is to cross black's simple plan of playing ...cxd4 and ...Nc5-e4, which would seem to offer him a fair share of the play. 15...cxd4 is still possible, but after 16 Nxd4 black's knight is denied the obvious route to make a similar impact.

Another typical Catalan liquidation. White has intended to play Nc4 but he was afraid of ...Nxe4. In this moment the immediate route to c5 is very much the issue too.
