A bad decision since the white rook was far more active than its black counterpart. Besides, the pawn structure now becomes damaged.
1.a4! was a much stronger option, when Black should prefer Rd5 2.a5 Nd7 3.Rc7! Nxe5 4.fxe5 Rb5 5.Rxe7 with just a slight edge for White – Baburin.
1...Rxc5 2.bxc5 Na4 3.Nd3 Bb2!
Forcing the exchange of White's more active minor piece.
4.Nxb2 Nxb2
With ideas like ...Nd3 and ...Kf7-e6-d5. Black soon won.
Savic - Fontaine
Serbian Team Championship 2005
White to move
Swapping the light-squared bishops in order to gain access to the c4 and c6 squares.
1...Bxf1 2.Kxf1 Nc5 3.Rc4
As a result of the bishop exchange, the a4-pawn has become exposed.
3...Bg7 4.Bc1!
Preparing Be3 to eliminate the defender on c5.
4...f5 5.exf5 gxf5 6.Be3 Rc8 7.h5!
Vacating the h4-square for the knight.
7...e4?!
This loses a pawn.
More prudent was 7...Bf6 8.Rb4 Rc6 with chances for a draw.
8.Nh4 Bb2 9.Nxf5 Rf8 10.g4 Bxa3 11.Bxc5 Bxc5 12.Rxa4
With a sound extra pawn White won.
