Fridrik Olafsson, the legendary Icelandic grandmaster and former FIDE president, was born on this day in 1935.
He was the first top-class chess player from this small nation, which would later grow to become a noteworthy chess power; he is immensely respected in his homeland.

Fridrik won the Icelandic Championship 6 times, was twice the Nordic Champion, and participated in several top events, including a Candidates tournament (1959) and 2 Interzonals. He succeeded Max Euwe as FIDE President in 1978, and served in this post until 1982.

Russia's No 12 Alexey Sarana turns 22 years old today!

In July 2019, Sarana won the Russian Championship Higher League qualifying for the Superfinals of the Russian men's Chess championship for the 2nd year in a row.
