The December 2021 rating list is out. The big story is Alireza Firouzja's jump from 2770 to 2804 (+34), thanks to his Grand Swiss victory and European Team Championship exploits, making him world #2 and the youngest player ever to cross 2800.

RIP Jonathan Penrose, who has died aged 88.
The 10-time British Champion famously beat reigning world champion Mikhail Tal at the 1960 Leipzig Olympiad.
RIP Jonathan Penrose 1933-2021. Winner of ten British Championships between 1958 and 1969, he famously defeated reigning World Champion Mikhail Tal at the Leipzig Olympiad in 1960.
