Remember Tani Adewumi? The Nigerian refugee boy hit the headlines when he won the 2019 K-3 New York State chess championship at the age of 8 while living in a homeless shelter. Nicholas Kristof reported the story in the New York Times, the readers stepped up and helped the family get housing and his parents get jobs.

Here is a joyful update. On May 1st, 2021, at only 10 years old, Adewumi crossed the 2200 rating threshold needed to achieve the official US_chess title of National Master, making him one of the youngest chess players in history to do so.
