Viktor Korchnoi would've turned 90 today. #OnThisDay

One of the strongest players never to have become World Chess Champion, Korchnoi was a 10-time World Championship candidate & 4-time USSR champion. He played 3 official championship matches with Karpov.
Inimitable Viktor Korchnoi was born 90 years ago. Great and terrible he was famous for dedication to chess and fighting spirit. Arguably the strongest player not to become World Champion, at 70 he still won a supertournament, at 80 beat 2700+, at all times - will be remembered.

Vilnius, March-April 1984. At the age of 63, Vasily Smyslov (World Champion 1957-58; born 100 years ago today) managed to reach the final of the FIDE_chess Candidates, where he faced Kasparov.

🔗 Garry Kasparov (@Kasparov63):
Smyslov played so well into his senior years that it seemed he would play until 100 and beyond. He was world champion six years before I was born and we met in this candidates final a quarter century later! A legend.
