'One of the BEST days of my life' | Andrey Esipenko vs Magnus Carlsen | Tata Steel Chess 2021

Grandmaster Daniel King presents Andrey Esipenko vs Magnus Carlsen from the Tata Steel Chess tournament 2021.
Again finishing last and again grinding down his opponent in an endgame, Alireza Firouzja wins another game and is now the sole leader at #TataSteelChess going into the second rest day!
Going into the rest day it’s Alireza Firouzja leading the race, with Andrey Esipenko joining the 4-player chasing pack. Magnus Carlsen is now 1.5 points adrift on 50% and needs to win at least 3 of his remaining 5 games to have a realistic chance of an 8th title.

The head-to-head scores before Round 9 are as follows.

🗣 | Andrey Esipenko: "I was dreaming to play games against Magnus. My goal at the #TataSteelChess Tournament is to win at least one game, but I don’t feel pressure because it’s my first tournament. I just want to play well and play interesting games."

And so he did. 😉
Having met for the first time at the chessboard in 1971, the 8th and 12th world champions remained on friendly terms until 1992 (death of Mikhail Tal). Collaboration with Karpov helped Mikhail maintain excellent chess form and helped Karpov discover new facets of his talent.
