Very sad news: chess legend Lubomir Kavalek has passed away at 77. He was one of the greatest chess personalities of Czechoslovak and American chess.

After the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, he first moved to Germany, and shortly after to the US, where he settled and won the national championship three times.

He also represented the US at the Chess Olympiads, winning one gold and five bronze medals with the American team.

Kavalek was also a second for Bobby Fischer during his famous 1972 match against Spassky, and for Nigel Short between 1990-93.

Lubomir was also a very active chess journalist, having worked briefly for "Voice of America", and later on as a columnist for "The Washington Post".

Every year, I keep hearing from countless people: “I wish I have a coach so I can be a good chess player”. Imagine how good they would get if they started to self-improve each day, step by step, by learning tactics, endgame, strategy, etc., instead of wishing and doing nothing?

Tilburg 1991. In the final round (played 4th November) World Champion Garry Kasparov faces old rival Anatoly Karpov, as Viktor Korchnoi & Vishy Anand look on. Kasparov won to take 1st place in the event, 1½ points ahead of Nigel Short.

Another photo of Khalifman, presumably from Wijk aan Zee 1991, and presumably from the Dutch archives (https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/), although I can't find it in there!

Caracas, 1st July 1970; the 10th round of the 'Presidente de la Republica' event. The Czechoslovak/US grandmaster Lubosh Kavalek is photographed in play v. the 19-year-old Anatoly Karpov (USSR). Kavalek won this game on the way to winning the event.

Alireza Firouzja will try to build on his 100% record (played 2, won 2 in last year's Norway Chess) against Aryan Tari in Round 4, where once again the players have played very few classical games against each other before!
