Some interesting picture posted by Kirsan Ilyumzhinov to congratulate Garry Kasparov on his birthday, April 13th 2014, when they both were still competing for the FIDE Presidency.

The photo was taken in Zurich, July 19th 1991. Kasparov is holding the Korloff trophy, forged of bronze and gold and studded with 1018 diamonds. It weighted more than 7 kg.

Kirsan bought this trophy for an undisclosed amount of money, and have kept it on a UBS safe ever since; only a couple of times it was exhibited in the Savoy hotel for some special occasion. Kasparov is said to have donated that money to some humanitarian cause.

Puzzle of the Day!

Magnus Carlsen, the greatest chess player of all-time, turns 30 today. We are as fortunate as those who witnessed "live" Capablanca's, Fischer's or Kasparov's games at the height of their careers (Carina Johansen/NTB archive).

For the first time in the #SkillingOpen the 1st day of a match has ended 2:2 (after 4 wins for White!). If tomorrow's mini-match were to be drawn 2:2 we'd go to tiebreaks:

What a stunning turnaround, as after surviving a lost position Magnus had been pushing for 10 minutes only to stumble into mate! We're back to 1:1:
