When I started out playing chess as a kid I thought I should be world champion. As a kid you have no idea what that means and you only sort of picture it. It is hard to imagine that I waited all those years and it happened in a late stage of my career.

He was never a world champion but here's a remarkable fact about Akiba Rubinstein's play: he has beaten Emanuel Lasker, José Raúl Capablanca and Alexander Alekhine in his very first encounter with each of these iconic masters.

Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen won his fifth world BLITZ title. He has won the world RAPID three times, and the CLASSIC title four times and now has 12 world titles in total.

"Triple crown again, hope this one will last more than a couple of days!" (as Magnus Carlsen said)

We are just starting 2020, but can say 2010 - 2020 was a decade dominated by Carlsen, and 2019 ended in big style. Now, he holds the three chess titles again - classic, fast and blitz - and on the new FIDE rating list he will be the world number one in all three categories as well.

He won the tournament in the tiebreaker match against
North American Grandmaster, Hikaru Nakamura, who also finished with a beautiful score of 16.5 / 21. The first game of tiebreake ended in a draw, and Carlsen won the second. Carlsen and Nakamura split the prizes and won $ 55,000 each. Sure they will have a very happy new year! ;)

Congrats to them!
Magnus wrote a post on Instagram saying, "Been a great year on and off the board. On to the next one."

One of the pictures he shared in the post was this one with his girlfriend!

Magnus Carlsen arrives for the game and starts the clock. His opponent Maxim Matlakov makes the move 1.d4 and Magnus' thinking time begins. Usually in a 3-minute blitz game you want to make your moves as soon as possible. However, Magnus takes his time - he drinks his water, removes his suit and then after 20 seconds, which is quite a lot of time in a blitz game, his first move!

This just goes to show what confidence the World Champion has on his abilities!
