Ivanchuk surprised his opponent by playing 11...d5!
It is amazing that this impressive move has been played more than 200 times since this game in 2003!
It is clear that 12.cxd5 is not possible as the Nc3 is shaking and if 12.exd5 Nxd5! 13.Nxd5 e6 regains the piece.
12.Nxd5 can be met with the strong 12...e6! when after 13.Nxf6 (13.Ne3 Nxe4) 13...Bxf6 14.Be3 Rd8 15.Nc2 Qe7 and Bxa1 white's compensation is insufficient.

13.a3 unnecessarily weakens b3 and c4. Exchanging the bishops by 13.Bd3 is also dubious as after h3 and g4 white's bishop seems stronger than Ba6.

Instead of 12.Re1, Taking on c6 is possible but it is preferable to keep spatial advantage. 12.Bf3 to protect d5 is unnecessary and wastes a tempo.
