๐Ÿ”น CHAMPION: Peter Svidler| 8/11(+5 -0 =6) |

๐Ÿ”ฐThe Tilburg chess tournament was a series of very strong chess tournaments held in Tilburg, Netherlands. It was established in 1977 and ran continuously through 1994 under the sponsorship of Interpolis, an insurance company. Fontys Hogescholen shortly revived the tournament series from 1996 to 1998, when the last edition was played. Since 1994 there is another annual chess tournament taking place in Tilburg, which has the name De Stukkenjagers, the field is generally much weaker than the traditional Tilburg tournament.

๐Ÿ”ฐ The 2nd Annual Fontys International Chess Tournament was a Category XVII event held in Tilburg, The Netherlands from September 26th to October 10th, 1997. 12 of the world's top players, including the World Champion, competed in a round robin format.
The participants were (in order of Elo):
๐Ÿ”… Garry Kasparov (2820),
๐Ÿ”… Vladimir Kramnik (2770),
๐Ÿ”… Alexei Shirov (2700),
๐Ÿ”… Michael Adams (2680),
๐Ÿ”… Judit Polgar (2670),
๐Ÿ”… Loek van Wely (2665),
๐Ÿ”… Joel Lautier (2660),
๐Ÿ”… Peter Svidler (2660),
๐Ÿ”… Peter Leko (2635),
๐Ÿ”… Jeroen Piket (2630),
๐Ÿ”… Alexander Onischuk (2625),
๐Ÿ”… Tal Shaked (2500).

The tournament was a major landmark for young grandmasters Kramnik and Svidler as they tied with Kasparov for first place with 8/11, a full point above the rest of the strong field.
