Despite appearing to be made from wood, Liz Truss may not have misspent all of her 44 days in Downing Street. I am not sure if she was given the chance to elaborate, but this is a significant statement in a forum that she knows will receive plenty of attention.

This makes for distressing reading. Distress, though, which is dwarfed by that being experienced by Tom's mother. This casts a light on a reprehensible system which is manipulated by people behaving in a reprehensible manner.

There are enough skeletons fighting to climb out of Philip Davies's closet for his (extremely belated) concerns about excess deaths to be swept aside. However, he is now on record as having spoken about them and, since his surname does not begin with B and end with ridgen, perhaps some people may pay attention.

Not paying any attention at all are these two goons at the bottom of the arrow; yet they are paid by the public purse to sit and natter as one of their colleagues speaks about mortality. Rude, stupid and arrogant, by the looks of it.

Does anyone sitting in Parliament imagine that police will exercise discretion when it comes to working with the (very limited) nuance contained within such provisions?

'Replace the outdated Vagrancy Act 1824 with a suite of modern replacement powers to enable the police and local authorities to respond to begging and rough sleeping where it causes nuisance to the public, including by obstructing shop doorways and aggressively begging by cash points.'

Of course—and you guessed it—nuisance may be defined by anyone that decides they are experiencing 'harassment, alarm or distress'.
