HOW IT STARTED:
When we first launched UTasks, our priority was simplicity and efficiency. We built our infrastructure on virtual machines, running the application in Docker and deploying it with Ansible and Docker Compose.
This setup worked smoothly, but scalability was a challengeβsudden traffic spikes meant delays, and planned maintenance required shutting down entire machines, taking a significant portion of our servers offline.
As UTasks gained traction, waves of new users arrived. Continuous improvements and word-of-mouth did their job, and suddenly, reliability under high loads became a top priority.
HOW IT EVOLVED:
To address these challenges, I proposed moving to Managed Kubernetes on Spot instancesβa flexible and cost-effective solution where virtual machines can be terminated with notice, ensuring optimal resource allocation.
We prepped Kubernetes, fine-tuned UTasks, and when the time was right, we seamlessly switched traffic to the new setup.
Thatβs how real improvements happenβno downtime, no unnecessary disruptionsβjust smart execution and strategic thinking.

The new architecture is more complex, requiring Kubernetes expertise, but the payoff is huge. We now leverage cutting-edge solutions to maximize reliability, security, and fault tolerance, making UTasks more resilient than ever.

π‘ We've noticed some unusual behavior in the app. While we're looking into it, we want to give you a heads-up about potential issues that might affect some users when working with UTasks!
π UTasks fails to detect project users who are set as Administrators in the group settings (on which the project is based) and have enabled "Remain anonymous" (posting on behalf of the group). By doing so, they remain hidden from both group members and our application.
As a result, these users wonβt be able to access the project - UTasks canβt recognize them or load the task list!
Possible solutions:
1β£ Turn off the Administrator Anonymity setting in the group.
2β£ Grant UTasks full admin rights in the group.

The issue is intermittent, occurs very rarely, and is not platform-specific. So far, we haven't been able to replicate it in our test environments. #SORRY
