#OTD in 1940, the Vought F4U Corsair flew for the first time. In 1943, the Corsair and F6F Hellcat (AKA the "Terrible Twins") destroyed 5 enemy planes for every U.S. plane lost. This 1944 photo is of factory-fresh Corsairs and Hellcats being prepared to be shipped to the Pacific. https://t.co/fgdPwzIt7n

βš“πŸ“° #USNAVY UPDATE: Two Decades of Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific: Pacific Partnership 2026 Mission Begins

SAN DIEGO -- Pacific Partnership, the U.S. Navy’s largest annual maritime humanitarian and civic assistance effort conducted in the Indo-Pacific, officially began with the departure of U.S. personnel from San Diego to the mission coordinating hub in the Philippines, May 27, 2026.

The Pacific Partnership 2026 (PP26) team, led by U.S. Navy Capt. Robert C. Reyes, mission commander, and Canadian Armed Forces Col. Alain Lafrenière, deputy mission commander, will conduct mission stops in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.

"This year marks the 20th anniversary of Pacific Partnership, and the 22nd time embarking on this critical mission alongside our allies and partners," said Reyes. "With our unified commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific, we strengthen regional security by building host nation capacity to prepare for and overcome crises, deepen cooperation, and deliver an enduring impact across the region.”

#OTD in 1944, German U-boat U-549 torpedoed and sank USS Block Island (CVE-21) near the Canary Islands. Block Island was the only U.S. Navy carrier lost in the Atlantic during World War II. The U.S. Navy avenged the loss of Block Island by sinking U-549 later that night. https://t.co/PATtP4SLdN

#OTD in 1958, USS Stickleback (SS-415) was holed on her port side in a collision with USS Silverstein (DE-534) near Hawaii. The sub had been going to a safe depth but lost power and broached 200 yards ahead of the destroyer escort. The entire crew was rescued before the sub sank. https://t.co/nwS6m0JhMc
