Hello everyone.
I am a 6th year Medical Student at Al-Azhar university in Cairo, and this is my USMLE Step 1 experience.
SCORE: 263 (early November 2020)
Resources:
1. Initial period: From the 3rd to 5thmedical year. I do not consider this period as an actual preparation for step 1; it was just for gaining medical knowledge and building good basics from considerable resources. I did not have a specific schedule during this phase; I was just studying whenever I had free time after studying for the college and attending clinical rotations. I used the following resources:
- Kaplan books and videos (except for pathology)
- Pathoma book and videos
- UW (after I finish each subject or chapter from Kaplan)
- Kaplan Q bank: after I finished all Kaplan books
- First Aid
- Rx Q bank: after I finished the first round of FA
- Sketchy micro and pharma
- High yield gross anatomy
2. Dedicated period: From December 2019 to November 2020 (during my 6th medical year, I did not study for anything during this period except for Step 1) with about 2-3 months off. I did in this phase:
- UW (2 times)
- FA (about 2-3 times)
- Boards and Beyond: I think doing Kaplan is not necessary anymore thanks to B&B which explains everything you need to know very simply and briefly in the same time (unlike Kaplan). That’s why If I could go back in time, I won’t do Kaplan and I could save several months of preparation.
- 100 cases of ethics for Conrad Fischer
- Anatomy shelf notes
- Sketchy: I did all micro and pharma and some sketches in the pathology section
- Pixorize: for biochemistry and immunology. Sketchy and Pixorize are great resources if you a visual learner. I also tried to watch a few videos of Picmonic but I found out they were silly videos and won’t stick to my mind like Sketchy and Pixorize, so I decided not to do Picmonic.
Self-Assessments: (arranged chronologically)
- NBME 13: 42 mistakes (about 2 years before the exam, after finishing all Kaplan books and pathoma and before starting FA)
- NBME 7: 44 mistakes (14 months before the exam)
- NBME 5: 46 mistakes (11 months before)
- NBME 6: 35 mistakes (10.5 months before)
- NBME 11: 22 mistakes (10 months before)
- NBME 19: 38 mistakes (9 months before)
- NBME 17: 240 (7 months before)
- UWSA1: 247 (6.5 months before)
- NBME 1-4: 24-28 mistakes (5 months before)
- NBME 12: 22 mistakes (4.5 months before)
- NBME 20: 34 mistakes (4 months before)
- NBME 15: 242 (3.5 months before)
- NBME 21: 28 mistakes (3 months before)
- NBME 22: 29 mistakes (1 month before)
- NBME 16: 255 (3 weeks before)
- NBME 23: 23 mistakes (2 weeks before)
- Free 120: 93% (13 days before)
- NBME 24: 30 mistakes (12 days before)
- UWSA2: 249 (5 days before)
- NBME 18: 15 mistakes (2 days before)
- Doing all NBMEs is not necessary if you are short of time. But if you intend to do all, do not use the old ones (e.g. 1-4) as an assessment tool becuase they are not predictive, use them as a learning tool.
Exam day:
1. I was so nervous at the beginning of the exam (which is normal), but I felt Okay after doing some questions which appeared not difficult.
2. The time was not a problem at all. I was finishing the 40 questions in about 45 minutes, So I had about 15 minutes in each block for reviewing marked questions.
3. I was marking about 10 questions per block except the 6th block which appeared more difficult for me than the other blocks, So I marked about 20 questions in this block.
My thoughts:
1. I did not use Anki. I tried it for one day but it was boring for me to just read decks.
2. Every experience is personal, and what worked for me may not work for you and vice versa. That’s why I think that the best way to know something is to try it by yourself and then decide whether or not you will use this resource. For example, most people say Sketchy pathology is not useful but I tried it and it was useful for me in some topics that were difficult for me to differentiate between them like Nephrotic and nephritic syndrome, vasculitides, Leukemia and lymphomas, etc.

good luck for all

Hey everyone,
I want to share my experience studying, the sources and methods I used, and any mistakes I made and/or things I could have done better. This write-up is, more or less, my personal experience and endorsement for the use of Anki. I’ll keep this as short and to the point as possible, with a TL;DR at the bottom.
Firstly, I’m a graduate of Alexandria University in Egypt. I finished my 12th and final semester in Novemeber 2019, and began preparing for the USMLE Step 1 starting February/March thereafter, which coincided with the beginning of my internship year (which ends in March 2021).
My total study period was 10 months, from February of 2020, until my exam date on the 17th of December, 2020. I received my score report on the 6th of Janurary, 2021 (3 weeks later).
My primary and only source of “studying” was Anki. By now, I’m sure most of you have heard of it, but for those who haven’t: Anki is a flashcard program that uses spaced repetition for maximal long term memory retention of information. I did not use any textbooks whatsoever, nor did I take any notes or otherwise. Once again, I only used Anki in addition to question solving (Uworld, and a bit of AMBOSS, but I’ll get to that later).
Before I move forward, this Youtube channel is your friend with regards to Anki and related USMLE decks: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLeZR5LtbJ8Klmeux_6TTJwI highly recommend going through Anki 101 Basic Skills playlist before reading the rest of this as I’m going to use some terminology related to Anki moving forward.
The deck I used was the AnKing Step 1 Overhaul. At the time, it was version 3. Right now, it has been updated to version 8 and contains some 32000 flashcards. I finished almost all of the flashcards in the AnKing Overhaul deck, except for maybe 1000-2000 cards that I decided were not relevant or otherwise duplicates.
Other sources I used were Boards and Beyond, Pathoma, Sketchy, Uworld Step 1 Qbank, and about 500 questions of AMBOSS towards the end.
I would watch a specific video, whether from Boards and Beyond or Pathoma, then I would unsuspend all of the flashcards for that video. I used to do about 100-150 new cards/day, and I upped that to around 200 new cards/day towards the end as I was getting impatient (I do not recommend this, will come to it later). Needless to say, I did all of my review cards, every single day, and I rarely let reviews pile up into the next day.
I then started solving Uworld questions towards the 2nd half of my study period, so around June or July. However, I do not recommend this (will come to it later).
Lastly, I did an NBME when I was around halfway through Uworld, and then decided to finish the rest of Uworld before finishing all other NBMEs, one after the other.
These were my NBME scores:
17 – 252 (31-10)
18 – 261 (11-12)
19 – 244 (30-11)
20 – 257 (06-12)
21 – 249 (08-12)
22 – 252 (09-12)
UWSA1 – 275 (13-12)
Free 120 – 92% (13-12)
Predicted score: 258 (95% CI lower limit: 249, upper limit: 266)
Actual score: 263
Recommendations for study:
1- Anki is by far the strongest tool I’ve come across with regards to memory retention of information, and medical education specifically. I studied throughout my entire medical education using textbooks as I did not this application existed. However, I was introduced to it by my cousin in early 2020. Initially, of course, I was very skeptical. After studying my whole life using a specific way, how are you supposed to change your studying entirely? However, as I started digging deeper into what Anki is and how people have been using it to study medicine for years now, I started changing my mind. I understood what Anki meant, and how it adheres to the two most important principles of learning and retaining learned information: practice testing, and distributed practice. I then used the AnKingMed Youtube channel to orient myself regarding Anki and the AnKing Overhaul deck. I then downloaded the deck, and adhered to a year long routine from there.

I started my day by finishing my reviews, then I watched a video, then I unsuspended the flashcards related to that specific video.
2- Start solving questions early. Do not use Uworld just yet. I wish I had used another question bank during studying because I felt I had “wasted” Uworld by solving it during study, and then solving it again random timed, because there were a lot of questions I had seen before, and I felt that my Uworld percentage was therefore inflated. The main issue here is that I felt it eroded my confidence going into the exam, because while my Uworld percentage was around 91%, there was a part of me that was doubting it because I wasn’t sure how many questions I was getting right just because I had seen them before. So what’s the problem with all of this? It’s not a huge problem/issue in my opinion. But I think there’s a real benefit in doing the entire 3400 or so question, 100% random timed, and having a percentage at the end that you can reliably believe. There is no better predictor of your performance on your exam than doing some 80 blocks in exam like conditions, and having a percentage to back it up. Therefore, if I were to do it again, I would have probably used a question bank like AMBOSS while studying chapter by chapter, and then when I was finished with studying, I would do Uworld from start to finish in random timed mode.
3- Even though Anki is an amazing tool to learn and retain information, it is not without its faults. A major problem I was falling into while studying is that I was memorizing the way a flashcard looked, instead of really understanding/internalizing the information that the flashcard was trying to test me on. I also ignored the “Extra” portion of flashcards for some 3 months of my study because I was fed up with doing reviews. I paid for this when I did questions later, because I realized I was making a lot of mistakes because I was simply memorizing the way a flashcard looks, and even ignoring relevant information in the “Extra” portion of flashcards that allow the information to be integrated in your mind in a testable way. So, what’s the solution? TAKE YOUR TIME while doing flashcards, and ALWAYS look at the extra portion. Make sure you understand the flashcard 100% before moving on to the next one. It might seem hard, but believe me, you will know or have a “feeling” when you’re studying a flashcard and you don’t really understand what you just memorized nor do you know where it fits into the bigger picture. Once again, the AnKing Overhaul deck is the best deck available, and this won’t be a problem if you take your time doing your flashcards.
4- Do NOT do more than 100-150 new cards a day. The reviews pile up extremely quickly and it will be very difficult doing more than 600 reviews a day. Even though the reviews themselves may not take very long, but they are very demanding. I made a mistake of doing 200 new cards/day, sometimes even 250 or 300 for around a month or two, and I paid the price of doing 1000+ reviews a day, which is something that I do NOT recommend AT ALL. Your time is better spent taking care of your mental health by doing less than 500-600 reviews a day, and doing questions if you feel like you have extra time during your day.
5- This is super important: making your own flashcards for questions you get wrong when you start doing question banks. If using Anki to study is 50% of the process, then properly solving and LEARNING from your mistakes is the other 50%. Whenever you solve a question and get it wrong, you have to ask yourself first: why did I get this question wrong?
If the answer is A) deficiency of information. Then ask yourself, what was the information that I needed to get the question right? Make a flashcard for that extra piece of information.
📝 Usmle In Arabic 📝
Photo
B) Confusion between 2 answer choices, and picked the wrong one. Then make a flashcard that differentiates between the 2 answer choices.
C) Carelessness while solving, and reading the question wrong. This is the easiest to fix: use the highlight function, and go slower, and make sure you highlight the question at the end of the question stem so you go through it very carefully, making sure you don’t answer based on “decreased” instead of “increased” for example.
There are other reasons you can get a question wrong, but I’ve listed the ones that got the most wrong for me. Once again, it is just as important to ask yourself WHY you got a question wrong, and then proceeding to fix that problem to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. This is progress.
I think that about sums everything up. If anyone has any questions I’ll be glad to answer them and I’ll update this post with any questions and answers.
TL;DR
I studied exclusively using Anki, and nothing else. I used the AnKing Overhaul deck. I used B&B, Pathoma, Sketchy. I solved Uworld and 500 questions of AMBOSS. I then made my own flashcards for mistakes that I made while solving questions.

INDEED, THE MATTER BELONGS COMPLETELY TO ALLAH." AL-I-IMRAN [3:154]

I am an old IMG (class 2014)
I started at December 2018 by Kaplan lectures and books in physiology and pharmacology
I wanted to enjoy learning and in the same time I was already loaded with my work as senior resident in my home country
I couldn't say it was a waste of time except that I was memorizing kaplan books more than one time
and my advice if you will listen to kaplan physiology and pharmacology, read from kaplan book with lectures just one time then shift to (FIRST AID)
I finished my residency in june 2019, So I started more seriously with Kaplan biochemisty lectures and book again :]
Dr Turco is really great
In July 2019, I started MICRO from FIRST AID
I tried many sketchy videos but didn't like memorizing sketchy symbols which are not related to my culture and I am not familiar with.
I found great book called (Micro made easy) which made me understand especially general bacteriology, bacteriology , virology
I was making my drawings and mnemonics for every microorganism , of course it takes time but micro was one of my highest performance subjects
in August 2019, I made IMMUNOLOGY from FA and BnB
In September 2019, I made Cardiology from FA and BnB and UW offline 2016 (I didn't know that uworld is updating every day 🙃)
I had a gab from October 2019 to January 2020
started again systems form FA+pathoma+UW
August 2020, I had finished FA first round + most of UW 2016 + many pathoma chapters including general pathology
So, I subscribed to uworld online 3 months from 1 Augusut to 1 November ... I finished all of uworld + second read of FA
I extended uworld 2 times ( one month then 2 weeks till my exam day )
So, better to do 6 months or 1 year subscription
I didn't have the option of reset in my 3 months subscription
and I was very confused how to do the second round (you can mark all qs and it will not take more than 2 hours but really beneficial )
I discovered that late, so i made around 2000 Qs ( random marked + some systems in system wise agian like neuro, psychiatry, genetics, renal, reproductive as they were my weaknessess)
also, when i found myself weak in antomy in UWSA 1 (2 weeks before the exam I made anatomy uw blocks and answered them)
October and November were the most important months in my preparation
I was taking assessment every week (trying to fix my weak areas and improving)
NBME 16 (6/10/2020): 230
NBME 17 (20/10/2020): 232
NBME 19 (27/10/2020): 215
NBME 21 (4/11/2020): 245
NBME 18 (11/11/2020) one month before exam: 246
NBME 24 (18/11/2020) offline : 30 mistake
NBME 23 , 20 offline
UWSA 1: 2 weeks before exam : 245
UWSA 2: 1 week before exam : 251
free 120 : 4 days before exam : 83%
Exam (15 December 2020) : 251
I mistakenly chose Africa instead of middle east in my application, It made me late one month in scheduling my exam. It was hard time for me as I was studying without knowing when I will take the exam.
the permit sent to me at 5 December and I scheduled the exam at 15 December
During these 10 days, I read First aid for the last time with my study partners (This is really helpful at last days as you want to read quickly and overcome your fatigue). I think it was my 5th read
Day before exam, I travelled to another city (5 hours )
I read ethics from first aid, revised my notes of UWSA1,2)
when I arrived , I was planning to listen to randy and dirty usmle in ethics but couldn't due to fatigue ... the only thing I did is listening to murmurs and heart sounds on YouTube)
Don't be afraid from anything but Allah
and try always to remember your intention from this journey and make your study devoted to Allah
all the best for you :)

*just received my CK score and it was #263.
didn't do step one yet...
*UWSA1:266 , UWSA2:256.
didn't do free 120 or any NBMEs as I felt they are a waste of time.
*main resources:

-UWORLD... I did it twice.
I wrote my own notes and also used Uworld notes 2019 file.
-uworld for biostat review.

-100 cases for ethics.
-master the boards for cardiology only.

-randy neil videos for biostat.(watched a couple of vidoes, wish i watched all of them)-->highly RECOMMENDED!
***a couple of points to keep in mind:
-Uworld is really enough , it covers most of concepts tested in exam. don't confuse yourself with different questions banks and books.

-use uworld as a tool to identify your weaknesses ,for ex: I found myself weak in nephrology so i read nephro from medstudy, i also found myself weak in cardio ,so i read it from Master the boards and so on.

-the question style in exam is clear : most people claim that the questions are vague, convoluted and really hard-->this is stupid , for each question I read , i knew the diagnosis and knew what they are asking about but they trick you in management , so you have to know the exact steps in management of each disease , and Uworld algorithms do a great job regarding that ! most of questions are about 5-7 lines but had a few questions where they were as long as 15-20 lines but they were doable.

-don't go to the exam putting in your mind that it will be hard and vague because of the following: you are going to see a lot of straight forward questions that are super easy , but then you are going to think: it can't be this easy , there must be a trick somewhere so you will end up changing your right answers for the wrong ones!!

-the exam is so so so doable , NOT rocket science so don't stress yourself out !!!!

- ethics are highly tested and I really did bad in that topic. 100 cases for ethics will help you answer 50% of them , the other 50% is really dependent on your judgement.
-patient safety: I had about 10 questions , again UWORLD helped me to answer some of them but the rest really had no clue. unfortunately, I don't know where to prepare for this the right way.

-biostat: had 10 questions in exam , had two abstracts ,, each one had 3 questions and I really did bad regarding biostat section....it was my weakness from the beginning , wish I worked more on it. Uworld , biostat review and randy neil videos will help you answer most of them.

-so, for me the clinical scenarios were easy to get right , but I really missed in ethics, safety and biostat-->work on theses topics from the beginning , don't leave them till the end.
-heart sounds and ECGs are easy to get and they really test you in the most common things , so don't freak out when you see them.
- don't take people opinions for granted , have your own experience , build your own schedule plan and always target your weaknesses and work on them!
good luck everyone in your preparation.
please DO NOT inbox me , just leave your questions down

Hamad Medical Corporation Residency Program او HMC

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2p8ZLsZiyw

2- TOEFL IBT
3- TOEFL PBT

Hamad Medical Corporation Residency
